The Emerson College is a small privately run college (about 3,800 undergraduates and 650 graduates) in downtown Boston . It was founded in 1880 as the "School of Oratory" by Charles Wesley Emerson and specializes in communication studies. The current president is Marvin Lee Pelton.

The college is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges . The following academic degrees are awarded: Bachelor (BA) , BFA, B.Sc. , Master (MA) , MFA and MSSp.

Admission as a student at the college takes place through an annual selection process (approx. 5,000 applications for approx. 700 study places per year). The study costs are (2017) US $ 46,852 plus US $ 17,690 for accommodation and meals; around two thirds of the students receive financial aid.

The faculty to student ratio is 1:10. The Emerson College library contains more than 175,000 volumes, approximately 10,000 microfilms, 9,000 audiovisual materials and 7,000 e-books.

The renowned literary magazine Plowshares is based at Emerson College .
