biography

Jack Davenport's parents are the British actors Maria Aitken (* 1945), best known in Germany for her role in A Fish Named Wanda , and Nigel Davenport (1928–2013), who played the leading role in the television series Howard's Way . From a young age, he was very fond of the presence of actors.

Both the father and the mother tried to dissuade him from acting, as this "can be a jobless art " and "a very difficult way to earn a living". After switching from the general public school to the boarding school "The Dragon School" at the age of just eight years, the parents divorced and thus did not burden their son with their separation. Jack gained his first experience as an actor during his time at Cheltenham College, when he played there in the Theater Clwyd. Then he went, like his father, to the University of East Anglia and studied English literature and film studies there; nevertheless he wanted to try his hand at acting.

Davenport got the role of Miles in the British series This Life about young lawyers, a handsome and capricious grief who particularly impressed female viewers, although the series only lasted two seasons. He played his first film role as a zookeeper in Wild Creatures alongside John Cleese.

In 1999 he played in Anthony Minghella's literary adaptation The Talented Mr. Ripley, the role of Peter Smith-Kingsley, which was rewritten for the film. His final breakthrough in England was with the series Coupling - Who with whom? (2000). Davenport played the unfortunate Steve who lives with his girlfriend Susan.

The high point of his film career so far was his role in Pirates of the Caribbean . He played the Commodore James Norrington on the side of Johnny Depp , Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley , as well as in the second and third part of the film series.

Jack Davenport is married to fellow actress Michelle Gomez , with whom he has a son, who was born in 2010 and lives in south London.
