Snow Patrol is a British rock band from Glasgow ( Scotland ) and Belfast ( Northern Ireland ). Stylistically, the group is often assigned to alternative rock . To date, over 8 million albums have been sold worldwide.

history

At first the band was called Polarbear . Under this name she had released her first EP Starfighter Pilot (Electric Honey Label) before she had to rename herself for legal reasons.

Snow Patrol made their commercial breakthrough in early 2004 with their third album, Final Straw . In the British album charts, the record rose to third place. The single run reached number 5 in the single charts. Three more singles followed: Chocolate and the re-release of Spitting Games each made positions in the top 30. How to Be Dead reached 39th place.

In 2006 the album Eyes Open was released , which made it to the top of the British charts. The first single was You're All I Have (UK # 7). The second single, Chasing Cars , did not reach the top of the charts in September 2006 with the sixth place in the UK, but was in the UK Top 100 for a total of 166 weeks, making it the single with the longest stay in the UK singles charts ( As of December 8, 2015). Snow Patrol made their breakthrough in the USA with this song : it was listed on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, and it was in the top 10 (5th place).

The breakthrough in Germany was a long time coming. It was only through massive advertising that it entered the charts at the beginning of November. The single Chasing Cars rose to number 12 and made it into the top 10 two weeks later at number 8, while the album Eyes Open slowly worked its way up and made it into the top 20 for the first time after 36 weeks: number 19.

On October 24, 2008, Snow Patrol released their fifth album entitled A Hundred Million Suns . The band recorded a large part of the album in Ireland ( Grouse Lodge Studios ) and in the Berlin Hansa studios . Drummer Jonny Quinn said in an interview with the Belfast Telegraph in August 2008 : “ It's still very much melody-based, but it's different too in ways from the other albums. It's hard to know what everyone will make of it but we're happy. I'd go as far as to say I think it's our best album yet. "(German:" It (the album) is very melodic, but also different from the other albums. It's difficult to say how people will like it, but we're happy. I would say it's our best album so far. ") The Northern Irish daily" The Belfast Telegraph "had not kept to the agreement after the interview that the title would not be published until the band had confirmed their approval for it and published the wrong title of the album too early with the spelling mistake" One Hundred Million Suns ”. The annoyed singer Gary Lightbody thereupon personally published a correction on the band's homepage and named the exact and correct title " A Hundred Million Suns".

In 2009 the band toured as the opening act for the 360-degree tour of the Irish rock band U2 through the football stadiums of Europe and parts of America, performing a total of 18 times between June and September 2009.

The studio album Fallen Empires was released on November 11, 2011 and debuted at number three in the German album charts. For Snow Patrol this was the best chart position in Germany to date.

On March 27, 2017, the band announced via Facebook that a new album may be released in the same year. A total of 42 songs have been created over the past few years. Her seventh studio album, Wildness , was released on May 25, 2018 .
