action

Charlie, a young sailor from Washington, and his younger brother Sam are best friends. When they win a sailing competition together, Charlie receives a scholarship from Stanford University . He takes care of his younger brother like a father since her father left her. Charlie promises Sam to practice baseball with him every day until he goes to Stanford.

One day he lets himself be persuaded to go to a party of his friends, because they are going to the military academy soon. When Charlie and Sam stop at a traffic light on their way to the party, they get into a tragic traffic accident . Charlie can be resuscitated, but Sam succumbs to his injuries.

At the funeral, Charlie imagines he's seeing his brother. When he leaves the funeral prematurely, he meets his brother in the forest. Charlie feels obliged to keep the promise and has trained baseball every day with the spirit of his brother ever since.

Five years go by and Charlie still hasn't gone to Stanford, nor has he been sailing. Instead, he works and lives, at a distance from the outside world, in the cemetery where Sam was buried. A visitor to the cemetery turns out to be the ghost of a fallen former schoolmate.

One day Charlie meets young Tess in the cemetery, who is looking after her father's grave. The two immediately find each other attractive, but neither takes the initiative. Charlie is invited by his work colleague and only friend to his party, where he meets Tess again. She tells him that she will soon be sailing around the world and that she will test her boat that evening.

When she goes out to sea, she knowingly sails into a storm. Charlie finds her sleeping and slightly wounded in the cemetery the next morning. She tells him that she got caught in the storm the day before. He brings her home and tends to her wounds. Then he invites her to dinner. They spend the night together and make love. When Charlie leaves like every evening to meet his brother, Tess follows him. She tries to get Charlie to let go of his brother, but Charlie decides to stay with Sam.

The next morning, Charlie learns that Tess has been reported missing for two days, that she has not returned after the sailing test and Charlie realizes that it was her ghost with whom he spent the last day.

He decides to go looking for her with his friend and Tess' trainer. After hours of searching, he has to decide: does he keep looking for Tess or does he go back to his brother to keep his promise. He decides to keep looking for Tess and lets go of his brother. When they finally find Tess' boat, Charlie jumps into the freezing water and looks for her. He swims to the nearby island and finds the half-frozen Tess, who survives thanks to his body heat.

A while later, Charlie and Tess go back to the forest, where Charlie finally wants to say goodbye to his brother. Sam's ghost appears, but Charlie can't see it. He tells him that he understands that Charlie cannot take care of him forever. In parting, Charlie says: "We will always be brothers."

Finally, Tess and Charlie decide to sail around the world together.

criticism

“In his debut 'Igby', Burr Steers cast a bizarre, unsentimental look at growing up, but in his third directorial work he crosses the path of Nicholas Sparks, who combined happiness, suffering and romantic longing for many hits. The main difference to Sparks is the central bond, which is not a romantic, but a familial one, and the supernatural aspect that extends a life beyond death here. "
