Wildness is the seventh studio album by the British rock band Snow Patrol . The album was released on May 25, 2018. This is the first studio album in seven years after the decision was made to take a long break to work on their own projects.

background

After the Fallen Empires tour in 2012, the band announced in 2013 that they would be taking a break. Lightbody worked on the release of a new album by his supergroup Tired Pony , while McDaid et al. a. worked as a songwriter for Ed Sheeran songs such as Shape of You and Galway Girl as well as for the song What About Us by the American singer P! nk . About the name of the album, Lightbody told NME :

“There are many kinds of savagery, but I think that one can specialize in two: The savagery of the modern age with its confusion, illogic and alienation. The other is the ancient wildness, something original, living and wonderful that speaks to our passion, our love, our communication with nature and with each other. The latter is the kind of wildness of our new album. "

In addition, the album should be very personal. Lightbody also processed his father's dementia in the songs, about which he said the following:

“I think it's our first album that I didn't just ask a series of questions. This time I didn't want to leave it at that, I really wanted to find out why I was so unhappy, why I felt so out of place, and where all these fears were coming from. This time there is no protective shield either: Without exception, everything is in this album. I want to remember everything too. "

The reviews of the album were mostly moderate to good.

After a long break, "Wildness" gives an insight into a battered composer's soul that longs for liberation. [...] But perfected craft alone is obviously not enough to create an impressive or even haunting new beginning. "Wildness" shows only a tentative attempt to free oneself from it and possibly to find a new approach to making music. Sometimes it works, many songs like the motivational "Heal Me" show the fresh energy. Still: Overall, the album doesn't sound "wild", but rather like the handbrake on. Or, to interpret the album cover, the music staggers like an astronaut flying around between pigeons instead of floating free. [..] The songs seem too cautious because they just play it safe. "

“[...] He processes all of this on his band's seventh album, which is pure self-therapy. [...] Sometimes with perseverance slogans like "Don't give in - don't you dare quit so easy", sometimes with energetic insights like "It shouldn't be so fucking hard - it's just life on earth." which have little to do with the carelessness of previous albums. But Snow Patrol no longer write catchy tunes, but rather bulky things on the piano, on the acoustic, with subtle beats, strings and creaky vocals. [...] According to Lightbody, the last work by Nick Cave served as inspiration. It didn't do much: WILDNESS sounds like a jam session from Radiohead with Crosby, Stills & Nash. With songs that rarely inspire and titles like "Wild Horses" that are a no-go. "

- Marcel Anders : Musikexpress

“Where on“ Wildness ”the wildness promised in the title is supposed to lie is the secret of Snow Patrols. As on the two previous releases, it goes further away from the guitar walls of the big breakthrough album »Eyes Open« from 2005, towards more introspection, introvertedness, pleasant feeling. When it comes to songwriting, Snow Patrol are moving further away from their previous standard formulas: They expect their fans to be less popular. As far as the implementation of the song ideas is concerned, the band was not put off by the mixed reviews of its predecessor »Fallen Empires«, which with its indietronic sounds sometimes had a »Achtung, Baby« touch. [...] Snow Patrol consistently continue on this path: The synths chirp, pluck and thump, but now fit better and less obtrusively into the bold sound of the mostly strong songs. Only with a few pieces does one get the feeling that the excessive use of studio technology and sound effects is supposed to cover up a lack of musical substance (»Soon«). Less guitars, more bombast: Snow Patrol have never strayed as far from their previous sound as they did on »Wildness«. With that they may not have created their best, but at least the most versatile album. "
