The reviews of the album were rather average.
“New recording techniques, new ways of working, new sources of inspiration: you can't accuse them of not having made an effort. The sixth album by the stadium heroes from Glasgow was to be a turning point in the band's history. With “I'll Never Let Go” Snow Patrol squint a bit on the dance floor, but wobbling synths alone don't make a techno hit. Gary Lightbody's potato-in-mouth singing doesn't really fit into a disco. It just worked better for Kele Okereke! The we-have-changed-rhythm then runs like a mantra through "Fallen Empires". Often it is not just an effect, a guitar solo, that disturbs - no, a whole sea of sound! Even the LA Inner City Mass Gospel Choir, next to Michael Stipe, Lissie and Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens Of The Stone Age) guest on the recordings, acts more as heavy bulky goods than heavenly accessories. "
“The development towards large-volume poprock carried by synthetics is doing the British quintet quite well, all the more regrettable that there is no ultimate consequence to mark a real U-turn. By "completely different", Mr. Lichtkörper means a little too well with himself and his boys. Too often well-known pop rock ballad structures find their way onto the record ("Lifening", "The President"). Nevertheless, "Fallen Empires" is perhaps a small piece of Snow Patrol 2.0 - they just need the courage to pull it off with more conviction. "
