Galway Girl is a piece of music by the English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran . The single was created in collaboration with the Irish folk band Beoga and combines traditional Irish music with pop music. On March 17th ( Saint Patrick's Day , Irish national holiday) 2017, Sheeran announced the song as the third single from his album ÷ ( divide ) , which will also be released in 2017 , accompanied by a video with lyrics.

The title reached number 2 on the UK singles chart and number 1 on the Irish charts , subject to availability as download and streaming of the album .

background

Sheeran wrote and recorded the song with the Irish band Beoga . Beoga used parts of the title "Minute 5" from their own album "How to Tune a Fish" for the song Galway Girl . In an interview with The Irish Times , Sheeran stated that the opening sentence "She played the fiddle in an Irish band" was inspired by Niamh Dunne from Beoga. The rest of the text of the song is not written about someone special. According to Sheeran, he had to fight for his label to get the song on the album. According to the label, folk music is “not cool”. Still, Galway Girl ranked third on the album's streaming list on Spotify .

The song was announced on March 17th as the third single from the album and was added to the playlist on BBC Radio 2 on March 18th .

Sheeran was known to have had a Steve Earle title of the same name since 2000 , which became a number one hit in a cover version by Sharon Shannon and Mundy in 2008 and was the best-selling single of the year in Ireland. In an interview with the BBC, Sheeran said he had tried different versions of the text, but none of the other had worked. Taking something familiar and making something new out of it is an essential aspect of folk music - people have to deal with it. At a concert in Dublin in 2017, Sheeran played the first verse and chorus of the Steve Earle title with Beoga , followed by his own song.

reception

Amy Mulvaney called the Irish Independent title "definitive proof of how much Ed Sheeran loves Ireland". She also wrote about the hit potential of the song, which will reach the top of the charts in the next few weeks. Ed Sheeran manages with this single again that none of his songs are alike. So Sheeran can achieve, despite the same topic (love), that Ireland, which is hated by many, is conjured into the minds of the audience.

Music video

The music video was also received positively. Sheeran used a camera strapped to his chest to record the video from a night in Galway , Ireland. Irish actress Saoirse Ronan plays the lead role in the video . It was released on the official YouTube channel on May 3, 2017. The video is kept simple as usual from Sheeran and underlines the nature of the artist. The video shows the night in Ireland through the eyes of the artist.

Commercial win

The song debuted at number two in the UK charts when the album was released, just behind the single Shape of You, also released by Sheeran . The song had sold a total of 445,000 copies in the UK as of April 2017. The title went to number 1 on the Irish Singles Chart.
