Saoirse Una Ronan [ ˈsiːrʃə uːnə ˈroʊnən ] (born April 12, 1994 in New York City ) is an Irish actress . She became known to a wide audience for her supporting role as young Briony in Joe Wright's film Atonement , for which she was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe , among others . Her other successes include the novel adaptations In my Heaven and Brooklyn - A Love Between Two Worlds . For her role in Lady Bird , she was named Best Actress at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards .

Saoirse Ronan was born in New York City in 1994. At the age of three, her family moved to Ireland, where she grew up and attended school. Her father is the Irish actor Paul Ronan , whom she accompanied to the film sets of Confidant Enemy (1997) and The Journalist (2003) at a young age . Ronan, whose first name comes from the Irish language and means “freedom”, gained his first own acting experience as a 9-year-old with a recurring role in the award-winning Irish television series The Clinic (2003-2004).

In 2005 she starred as Orla Borland in the drama series Proof for four episodes , which earned her an audition for Amy Heckerling's romantic comedy Mainly in Love that same year . After the London casting of English children for the American production failed, 11-year-old Ronan got the role of Michelle Pfeiffer's daughter in the film . Then were Hollywooder agents from MGM , the Creative Artists Agency and the Endeavor Agency on the Irish young actress attentive and planned them as second Dakota Fanning to market. However, Ronan gave preference to the British film project Atonement from Joe Wright . In the film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Ian McEwan , she mimes a 13-year-old, gifted writing girl who misinterprets a situation in England around 1935 and thus both her life and that of her older sister (played by Keira Knightley ) and her lover ( James McAvoy ) destroyed. The figure is embodied by Romola Garai and Vanessa Redgrave in other stages of life . First test screenings of Mainly In Love and Atonement earned Ronan praise from the media, who later also praised her for her versatility in giving faces to American, Scottish and English characters. While Heckerling's film opened in US cinemas on September 15, Wright's literary adaptation opened a few weeks earlier, on August 29, the 64th Venice Film Festival . Months later, the part of Briony earned Ronan Oscar , Golden Globe Award and British Academy Film Award nominations . In the same year, the sixth grader was represented in the British family film Miracles of a Christmas Night and Gillian Armstrong's Houdini drama Deadly Magic with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Guy Pearce in the cinema.

In 2008, Ronan starred in Northern Ireland for the filming of Gil Kenan's end-time scenario City of Ember alongside Bill Murray , Tim Robbins and Martin Landau . She also took on the role of Susie Salmon in Peter Jackson's In My Heaven (2009) alongside Rachel Weisz and Mark Wahlberg . The project is a film adaptation of the bestselling novel of the same name by Alice Sebold , which was published in German-speaking countries under the title In My Heaven . He reports on the sex murder of a 14-year-old girl who then tries from heaven to stay in contact with her family and to bring the killer down. In 2011 she had the title role in the action thriller Wer ist Hanna? Alongside Cate Blanchett . held what they at the Young Artist Awards 2012 as Best Actress in a feature film was nominated. In 2013 she played the role of Melanie Stryder in the film adaptation of the novel Souls . From March to July 2016, she was on Broadway alongside Ben Whishaw in the Arthur Miller -Stück The Crucible (dt. Witchhunt ) seen in the female lead role on stage.

She also took on the lead role in the music video for the song Galway Girl by British singer Ed Sheeran .
