Maria Stuart, Queen of Scotland (original title Mary Queen of Scots ) is a British historical film drama directed by Josie Rourke about the fight between Mary Stuart and Queen Elizabeth I for the English throne. It marks the feature film debut of the artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse Theater and is based on the script by Beau Willimon (who previously proved his expertise in political matters as the showrunner of the television series House of Cards ). The main roles are played by Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie . The film celebrated its world premiere in November 2018 at the AFI Fest and was released in US cinemas on December 7, 2018. It started in Germany and Switzerland on January 17, 2019.
action
Queen Mary of Scotland became Queen of France through her marriage to Francis II . When he dies at the age of 16 and she becomes a widow, the 18-year-old herself is asked to marry again, but she refuses. Instead, Mary returned to her native Scotland in 1561 to become queen and ascend the throne to which she was born as Stuart. At Holgrov Castle she is expected by her half-brother James, who in the meantime ruled in her stead. As a woman, it is not easy for Maria to assert herself against the members of the clergy who do not want to follow a Catholic. Above all, John Knox railed against the returned queen. Because her brother is reluctant to see the crown in the hands of a woman, he is banished. Together with an army of Protestants, James wants to turn the citizens against his sister, but Maria is able to repel the attack on the Scottish throne.
When Elizabeth learns of her cousin's return at the English court, she does not initially see her power threatened. Mary proposes a treaty to Elizabeth under which she recognizes her rule if in return she appoints her as queen after her death. Elizabeth is still childless and comes under increasing pressure. The court is expecting an heir. It is recommended that Elizabeth marry her cousin to an Englishman in order to be able to influence the future heir to the throne through her husband. Elizabeth's lover Robert Dudley seems suitable for this, but Maria decides to marry Lord Henry Darnley, who is actually not befitting. On her wedding night, Maria caught her husband in bed with Rizzio, one of her closest confidants. Nevertheless, Maria desperately wants Henry to have a child, as this enables her to underpin her claim to the English throne. Elizabeth, who has smallpox, gladly accepts her cousin's request to become the prince's godmother.
Due to an intrigue at Maria's court, Rizzio is found guilty of adultery and is killed before her eyes. Since Henry was also involved in the plot, she banishes him to Kirk o'Field shortly after the birth of their son, whom she names after her grandfather and her brother James, even if her advice calls for his death. However, Maria does not want to become a female Henry VIII. Soon Henry is also murdered and Maria understands that she is no longer safe. Even when she marries the Earl of Bothwell, the clergy demand her removal. Her brother guarantees her his protection in case she abdicates and leaves her son in his care so that he can rule Scotland for his ward.
Maria enlists the help of her cousin Elizabeth. Even if she shows understanding of her situation in a male-dominated world at a secret meeting, there is nothing more she can do for her than to put her in a well-guarded place in England. She also promises her not to plan to murder her. Many years later, Elizabeth has to break her promise. Mary is accused of a Catholic plot and beheaded on February 8, 1587, but her son is said to one day become the first monarch to rule both Scotland and England at the same time.

Age rating
In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved for ages 12 and up . The statement of release states: “The film has a somber mood and contains some dramatic and emotionally intense scenes; also violence and killings happen in many ways. However, viewers from the age of 12 are able to place the events in the historical context and to distance themselves emotionally. With this age group, sufficient historical background knowledge and media experience can be assumed so that the scenes in question can be dealt with appropriately. "
Reviews and grossing results
The film has so far received mixed feedback from critics.
Helen O'Hara of Empire Magazine describes the film as a history lesson with more fire in the stomach than most. This also shows that a feminist perspective can really revive the same old Tudor psychodramas.
Benjamin Lee in the Guardian recalls a thematically similar film that focuses on female monarchs, Giorgos Lanthimos ' The Favorite - Intrigue and Insanity , but the films couldn't be more different, especially visually. Even if the story of Mary and Elizabeth has been told often enough, it is indisputable that Beau Willimon , the developer of the House of Cards project, connects the politics of the 16th century with his gloomy insight known from the series. Even if the machinations of those who ruled the era may be known to many, Josie Rourke and Willimon would have developed a captivating drama and thus an alternative to previous films. Rourke, who is the artistic director of Donmar Warehouse and who made her film debut with Maria Stuart, Queen of Scotland , has a lot of experience with stage productions, and she also made her transition to film. As an accomplished filmmaker, she created breathtaking images and made her story like a thriller. About Saoirse Ronan judges Lee, the Irish actress was perfect as Mary, vulnerable, fearsome, strong and sexy at the same time.
Anke Sterneborg writes in epd Film that after Katharine Hepburn , Vanessa Redgrave and Zarah Leander , Saoirse Ronan is the first Mary Stuart actress who is actually almost as young as the famous Scottish queen when she was a very young widow after the death of her French husband returned home. Both actresses, Ronan as Maria Stuart and Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth, embodied strong, determined and emotional heroines with their whole, modern presence and at the same time conveyed an idea of how difficult it must have been five centuries ago, such an inherited position actually to fill in and enforce female ideas against the male superiority.
The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) gave the film the rating "particularly valuable" and wrote in its reasoning: "The story of Maria Stuart, Queen of Scotland and rival of the British Queen Elisabeth, will be remembered by generations of pupils because of Remember Friedrich Schiller's drama with horror. The story and its real background hold a lot of potential - and that's exactly what Josie Rourke knows how to use for her drama with an excellent cast. "
In Germany, the film recorded 103,864 visitors.
