Brendan Coyle

Brendan Coyle (born David Coyle on December 2, 1963 in Corby , Northamptonshire ) is a British - Irish actor . In German-speaking countries he is mainly known for portraying Bates , Lord Grantham's personal servant , in the television series Downton Abbey . For this role, he was nominated for an Emmy in 2012 for best supporting role in a drama series.

life and career

Coyle is the son of a Scottish mother and an Irish father. During his youth he was not interested in acting and initially worked in his father's butcher shop after school. After his father's death he went to Dublin , where a relative of his father worked at the Focus Theater . In 1981 he attended drama school there and in 1983 received a scholarship to the Mountview Theater School in London .

Because of his education in Ireland, experience with performing Irish characters and with Irish theater, he is often cast for roles with an Irish background.

Coyle starred in numerous television series, films, and plays. In 1999 he received the Laurence Olivier Award for The Weir .

In German-speaking countries he was seen in several series and films. His best known role here is that of the disabled servant Bates in the television series Downton Abbey , for which he was nominated for an Emmy in 2012.

Coyle was dubbed by different voice actors. Michael Iwannek lends him his voice in Downton Abbey .

Coyle lives in Norfolk and is also an Irish citizen . He is the great-nephew of English football legend Matt Busby .
