occupation

Downton Abbey is a 2019 British period film directed by Michael Engler that continues the plot from the television series of the same name , with much of the original cast returning. The film is set in 1927 and shows an official state visit by the British royal couple to the Crawley family's English country house in Yorkshire . The film's framework is based on an actual trip the British royal couple made to Wentworth Woodhouse in 1912 to demonstrate the importance of the monarchy.

action

The film begins in 1927 . Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham, receives a letter from Buckingham Palace announcing that King George and Queen Mary will be visiting Downton Abbey on a royal trip across the country. Robert first informs his daughter Lady Mary Talbot and son-in-law Tom Branson. When Violet Crawley, the widow of the Countess of Grantham, hears the news, she is concerned that Queen Mary's lady-in-waiting , Lady Maud Bagshaw, Robert's distant cousin with whom the family has fallen out over an inheritance issue, will also be coming to Downton.

When the royal servants arrive, the servants of the house are outraged at their arrogance. Lady Mary believes that Downton Abbey's butler Thomas Barrow is not doing justice to the royal occasion. She therefore asks the retired butler, Mr. Carson, to temporarily resume his previous duties. The disgruntled Barrow therefore protests emphatically to Lord Grantham, who, however, is impressed by Barrow's integrity and orders him not to be released. The plumber who is supposed to fix the broken boiler flirts with Daisy and annoys her fiancé, the servant Andy Parker.

A man who calls himself Major Chetwode arrives in Downton Village. He seeks out Tom, who suspects that he is a royal detective who is taking care of the safety of the royal visit. Lady Mary follows Tom and Major Chetwode as they leave a pub together . Before the royal parade through Downton Village begins, Chetwode spots the waiting king on his horse and points a gun at him. He is thrown to the ground by Tom, and the hurried Lady Mary steps on Chetwode's hand, so that he lets go of the gun and can be arrested. In the meantime, Tom has met Lady Bagshaw's maid, Lucy Smith, to whom he is immediately drawn.

The household is completely taken over by the royal visitors and their entourage. The King informs Edith's husband Bertie Pelham, the Marquess of Hexham, that he should accompany the Prince of Wales on a three-month trip to Africa . Edith is happy for Bertie, but is also annoyed because she is pregnant and expects that she will give birth exactly when Bertie leaves with the prince. Tom meets a weeping woman in the garden. Not knowing that she is Princess Mary , he initiates a conversation that inspires her to stay with her unbearable husband for the sake of the children. Meanwhile, Anna discovers that Miss Lawton from Downton Abbey has stolen some valuable items. She agrees not to tell, provided Lawton returns the items and changes a ball gown for Lady Edith after the wrong garment was delivered to Downton.

Anna and John Bates want to take back the household and restore Downton's honor. The staff agrees, although Mr. Carson has concerns. Barrow and Mr. Ellis implement the plan and trick most of the royal employees into returning to London. The two men then go to York for a drink. While Barrow waits for Mr. Ellis to return from visiting his parents nearby, he meets Chris Webster, who invites him to a secret nightclub where mostly men dance together. The police storm the club shortly afterwards and arrest everyone there. Mr. Ellis discovers what has happened and uses his position in the royal household to secure Barrow's release. The two then confide their homosexuality to each other and Ellis later gives Barrow a silver medallion as a souvenir until they meet again.

At dinner, the king is impressed by the changed menu and praises the culinary skills of his chef. Mr. Molesley replies that Mrs. Patmore prepared dinner and that the Downton staff are serving it. Everyone is stunned as Molesley speaks to the king without permission. Robert apologizes for Molesley's behavior, but the Queen praises Mrs. Patmore's kitchen and tells Cora that they are used to people acting strange around her.

Violet is upset that Maud chose Lucy as her heiress to Robert. However, Isobel rightly suspects Lucy to be Maud's illegitimate daughter, which Maud confirms. She made Lucy her heiress out of love. Violet is understanding when she is told the facts. Henry Talbot, Lady Mary's husband, arrives home from Chicago in time to accompany the family to Harewood House . Princess Mary tells her parents that Tom influenced their decision to stay with her husband. The king then tells Tom that he owes him more than one thing.

Lady Mary asks her grandmother about her last trip to London . Violet says medical tests showed she had little time to live. Violet assures Mary that Downton's legacy will be safe in her hands. The King and Queen congratulate Edith and Bertie on their upcoming child and announce that Bertie does not have to go on a trip to Africa. During the festivities, Lucy enters the ballroom under the pretext of bringing a handkerchief to Lady Bagshaw. Tom wishes they could dance together, so they leave the ballroom and dance on the terrace.

At Downton Abbey, Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes discuss the future of the house. Carson believes the Crawley family will still live there a hundred years from now.

production

Highclere Castle , which was used as the fictional Downton Abbey estate.

Gareth Neame and Julian Fellowes began planning a feature film shortly after the series ended in 2016. In early 2017, a draft script prepared by Julian Fellowes was sent to all of the original actors in the series. On July 13, 2018, the producers confirmed that a feature film was being shot and production would begin in mid-2018. The script was written by Fellowes, who is also the producer. At the end of August 2018, it was reported that Brian Percival, originally intended as director, was replaced by Michael Engler . Percival would instead act as executive producer.

Main filming began in London in late August 2018. Until September 20, 2018, some sequences were filmed in Highclere Castle , the main location of the television series. Also in September, filming took place in Lacock with Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern and Michelle Dockery as well as Imelda Staunton, wife of Jim Carter, and Geraldine James. Scenes filmed in Lacock included a celebration with horses from the Royal Artillery . Filming ended in November 2018.

occupation

The TV series' original cast members including Hugh Bonneville , Elizabeth McGovern , Michelle Dockery , Laura Carmichael and Maggie Smith have been confirmed as characters to play on the series, with Joanne Froggatt confirming their involvement in a separate announcement. An announcement in August 2018 suggested that Imelda Staunton , Geraldine James , Tuppence Middleton , Simon Jones , David Haig , Kate Phillips and Stephen Campbell Moore would be among the cast in the film. The producers told the media that Simon Jones and Geraldine James will play the King and Queen of England, while David Haig will act as the King's butler.
