Harewood House is a country house near Harewood, City of Leeds , West Yorkshire , England . It belongs to the Treasure Houses of England , a marketing company for ten former stately homes in England.

The building was constructed from 1759 to 1770 for the Lascelles family, who later became the Earls of Harewood . The Lascelles had made great fortunes in the British West Indies through customs rights, slave trade, and credit transactions . Harewood House was designed by architects John Carr and Robert Adam . Most of the furniture comes from the English furniture designer Thomas Chippendale from nearby Otley .

During the world wars the house was used as a hospital.

As the first art guide to Harewood House from the early 19th century shows, the country estate looks back on a long history of interested visitors who were enthusiastic about the imposing architecture and the painting collections.

Lancelot "Capability" Brown designed the landscaped garden, and Sir Charles Barry later added a Grand Terrace .

The house is still the seat of the Lascelles family today. The head of the family is currently David Lascelles, 8th Earl of Harewood . His grandmother was Mary, Princess Royal , daughter of King George V and Queen Mary .

The property has become the property of the Harewood House Trust. The site is open to the public all year round. Harewood is still a popular destination for travelers in Yorkshire today . In addition to guided tours through the house and gardens, visitors can enjoy a bird nature trail, an adventure playground and regional specialties.

The Tour de France 2014 officially started here on July 5, 2014 .
