Comedy of Menace

Comedy of Menace means “comedy of chaos”. This is a play on "Comedy of Manners".

This term was used by the critics in the 1960s for the pieces by Harold Pinter . These include The Caretaker and The Birthday Party .

The term comes from Irving Wardle. The atmosphere in the pieces is characteristic, conveying a kind of threat all the time.
