history
On January 3, 1958, all areas except for the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas united to form the West Indian Federation . However, this federation only lasted until May 31, 1962. Many of the islands are now independent members of the Commonwealth , with some remaining British.
The former British territories of the British West Indies were:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Bahamas
- Barbados
- Dominica
- Grenada
- Jamaica
- St. Kitts and Nevis (formerly part of St. Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla )
- St. Lucia
- St. Vincent and the Grenadines
- Trinidad and Tobago
Islands that remained British overseas territories (some split off from former territory):
- Anguilla (formerly part of St. Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla )
- Bermuda
- British Virgin Islands
- Cayman Islands (formerly part of Jamaica)
- Montserrat
- Turks and Caicos Islands (formerly part of Jamaica)
The anglophone countries of Central and South America have historically been viewed as part of the British West Indies :
Cricket
In the sport of cricket , most of the above states and territories appear together as the West Indies cricket team and are one of the ten "national teams" that play test cricket matches . The cricket championships can often be compared with the famous FIFA soccer world championships. In the West Indies, the cricket championship has roughly the same significance as football has had in Germany since World War II .
