Troop ID
The troop ID is a document that serves as a service ID and legitimation feature for soldiers in the Bundeswehr . It is issued to the soldier by the personnel management department , managed and changed if necessary.
meaning
The soldier must always carry his troop ID with him, except when traveling abroad. The ID legitimizes access to Bundeswehr properties , the use of weapons during his service time and entitles him to wear the uniform as well as the badges of sovereignty and rank . Most military additional documents such as driver's licenses , medical helper cards or train tickets for military service are only valid in conjunction with him. For those doing basic military service, there was a stamp on the back: “Basic military service person”, which entitles them to benefits such as schoolchildren / students and people doing community service. Changes of any kind in this document must be confirmed with an official seal .
Electronic service and troop ID
An electronic service and troop ID card (eDTA) was tested from 2008. From 2013 the electronic service and troop ID was issued nationwide. It combines the previous troop ID card in paper form and the Bundeswehr PKI card in one card. Since January 1, 2017 for all civil servants and soldiers from rank top Stabsgefreiter only the eDTA valid.
Dimensions and characteristics
The electronic service and troop ID card is a polycarbonate card in ID-1 format according to ISO / IEC 7810 (dimensions: 85.60 × 53.98 mm; also used for electronic ID cards as well as driver's licenses and bank cards ). With the use of a biometric passport photo, it meets the latest security standards. Features to protect the ID card against forgery include a hologram, iris color gradients, microscripts and copy-resistant printing inks. The new card is valid for five years from the start of the application.
There is a contact chip on the back of the ID card, on which all visible data such as surname, first name and the department affiliation are stored. At the same time, it enables you to log on to the PC workstation, whereby the card is read in via a slot on the keyboard and the owner identifies himself with his associated password (Smartcard Logon). This chip also enables the encryption and decryption as well as the electronic signing of e-mails and files. It is part of the Bundeswehr's PKI system.
Troop ID in paper form
Dimensions and characteristics
The troop ID card in paper form is made from document-proof paper with a thickness of 120 g / m² and has a yellowish base color. For reasons of security against counterfeiting a light blue grid is upset. It is 14.5 cm long and 10.5 cm wide. The document, which is printed on both sides, is usually folded in the middle and then has the dimensions of an old German ID card . As of January 1, 2017, this troop ID will only be used for crew ranks up to corporal . If necessary, they will also receive the Bundeswehr PKI card as before.

criticism
The lack of protection against forgery of the ID card in paper form was often criticized. While the identity card is already provided with biometric features and is machine-readable, the Bundeswehr was still working with adhesive photos and official seals. Plans to replace the classic troop ID with a chip card initially failed due to the enormous costs of such a system. The document, which soldiers are supposed to use to legitimize themselves, is also little known among the civilian population.

The ID contains the following information:
- Rank
