NSN (military coding)

The NSN , National Stock Number or NATO Stock Number is an internationally recognized number used by the armies of different countries to identify products. It improves interoperability and is also used for customs classification. In the Bundeswehr it is called the supply number .

Structure of the number

General

The NSN consists of 13 digits:

  • The first two digits from the left indicate the Federal Supply Group (FSG); for example, “25” is used for vehicle components.
  • The material group together with the third and fourth digits indicate the material class (Federal Supply Class, FSC); for example, "2510" stands for vehicle cab, vehicle body and chassis components.
  • The numbers five and six form the NATO Country Code of the NATO Code for National Codification Bureau (NCB) and together form
  • with the last seven digits the NIIN (National Item Identification Number), whereby the last seven digits are pure counting numbers without any further meaning.

Example:

NSN 2510-01-028-8573

means material class "2510" (vehicle cab, vehicle body and chassis components), country code "01" (United States) and the serial number "028-8573".

For the Federal Republic of Germany, identification numbers are assigned in numerical order, starting with 12-010-0001, by the national cataloging authority in the logistics command of the Bundeswehr . Once a number has been allocated, it will no longer be allocated to any other supply item after it has been suspended. The NSN is intended to clearly and permanently distinguish a supply item from all others, thereby defining its identity, but not its position or sequence in relation to other supply items.

  • 26 = tires and tubes
  • 28 = internal combustion engines, turbines and their individual parts

Country code

Other codifications

The United Nations Common Coding System (UNCCS) is also often used in the military and NATO. The United Nations Standard Products and Services Code (UNSPSC) was created as the successor to the UNCCS . The UNSPSC competes with a number of other product and raw material coding schemes, such as the European Union's Common Procurement Vocabulary (CPV).

Since 2008, the Bundeswehr has been adding a barcode or a data matrix code to supply numbers that are machine-readable ( AIT code).
