At the end of 2012, the Bundeswehr reorganized its media work and brought the various editorial sections together in a joint editorial office ("Redaktion der Bundeswehr"), into which the editorial team for Y-Magazin was also integrated. The Bundeswehr editorial team has been working in Reinhardtstrasse since July 2014. 52 in Berlin-Mitte. The dapd news agency was based in this building until its bankruptcy and the cessation of the service in April 2013 .

concept

The Bundeswehr magazine provides comprehensive information that is moderately up-to-date - but with the aim of being up-to-date on background information and larger contexts. It sees itself as a supplementary medium to the daily and weekly updated periodicals of the media mix of the troop information.

target group

The readers of Y are active soldiers, soldiers of the reserve, civilian employees of the Bundeswehr, relatives and partners of the soldiers as well as the interested public. Y is created in the editorial office of the Bundeswehr in Berlin and appears six times a year, on the first Thursday of an even month (February, April, June, August, October and December). Anyone can subscribe to the magazine. The magazine's core target group is 20 to 29 years old, the extended target group 18 to 35 years.

Frequency of publication

Y appears monthly with two double editions (mostly June / July and December / January) and a volume of around 100 pages with a circulation of around 45,000 copies (2015). One of the editions appears as a monothematic special issue (“Special”): In 2017, under the title “I want you”, it deals with the topics of love, lust and partnership. In 2016 death and wounding were the focus of the edition “The highest commitment”. In previous years, the special was devoted to international conflicts and their causes (“Atlas of Crises”, 2015), the First World War (“Blutrausch in Europa”, 2014), the special forces (“A very special mission”, 2013), the relationship of the armed forces and society (“I belong to it”, 2012), global security policy (“Threatened world seeks future”, 2011) and the equipment of soldiers in action (“Customized protection”, 2010).

Awards

The special edition “The highest mission - death and wounding” - the cover picture shows the portrait of a dead, returning soldier under a milky plastic film - is one of the most award-winning magazines in 2016 and 2017. A monothematic special issue appears once a year. In 2016, the publisher and editorial team dared to tackle an emotional and sensitive topic: “The highest commitment - death and wounding”. In the four chapters "I am dying", "I kill", "I am wounded" and "I live", the editorial team depicts the essential aspects of the subject spectrum "death and wounding".

The Fox Awards jury commented on this issue: Chapeau, the Bundeswehr has shown courage! The subject of death, wounding, even dying itself is implemented with sensitive texts and a look that is both modern and appropriate to the difficult topic . At the Econ Awards, the jury said: The highest effort allows victims and perpetrators to speak. What the Y editorial team succeeds in with its multifaceted and touching articles is unique.
