Dame Penelope Alice Wilton , DBE (born June 3, 1946 in Scarborough , North Yorkshire ) is a British actress .

life and career

Penelope Wilton was born in Scarborough, northeast England, in 1946, the daughter of businessman Clifford Wilton and tap dancer and actress Alice Travers. Her passion for acting was born from her mother, who comes from a family of actors. Penelope Wilton is the niece of actors Bill Travers and Linden Travers , and the cousin of actor Richard Morant . Your grandparents had their own theater. Wilton attended the Convent School in Newcastle upon Tyne with her two sisters .

Penelope Wilton began her acting career as a stage actress. In 1972 she made her television debut with her role as Vivien Warren on the BBC television series BBC Play of the Month: Mrs. Warren's Profession . Her extensive filmography includes films such as The French Lieutenant's Lover , Freedom Cry , Calendar Girls and Pride and Prejudice, as well as television series such as Doctor Who and Downton Abbey . In 2004 she was honored with the British Order of Merit Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her acting achievements . In 2012, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Scarborough University. In June 2016 she was honored as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire .

In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

Penelope Wilton was first married to actor Daniel Massey between 1975 and 1984 . Their daughter Alice was born in 1977. From 1991 until the divorce in 2001, she was married to her fellow actor Ian Holm .
