action

Ten-year-old Sophie lives in an orphanage for girls in London, the operator of which often abuses the children. At night she wanders the hallways and corridors of the house or reads books under the covers. When she heard noises from outside, she went to the window to see where they came from. She observes a huge figure dressed in a black cloak, who carries a kind of thin trumpet with which she blows beautiful dreams into their bedrooms, as well as a bag. Sophie is discovered by the figure as she watches them on their foray. She quickly hides under the bedspread, but the giant sticks his huge hand through the window, takes Sophie and kidnaps her into the realm of the giants, because he is afraid that Sophie will tell other people about him and they will hunt him down.

When Sophie fears that she will be eaten, it turns out that the giant is friendly to her and has only taken her away because she has seen and observed him. The two quickly become friends, but there is danger from another side. The friendly giant isn't the only creature living in the land of giants. The other giants are much bigger and dangerous. In contrast to the friendly giant, they also eat people, but prefer children and want to attack the human world.

So Sophie and the giant devise a plan to go to the Queen of England to ask her to prevent this and to fight the evil giants. You can persuade the queen to help them.

The film ends with the evil giants being punished by the military on a remote, lonely island where they only find cucumbers to eat. Sophie, on the other hand, stays in Buckingham Palace. Whenever she wakes up there, she sees the big, friendly giant from a distance and wishes him good morning.

production

Development and history of origin

As early as 1991, the film producers Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy began developing a film adaptation of the book The BFG for the big screen and presented the Paramount Pictures project . Over the years the project was introduced to other studios and several screenwriters . Among other things, the late actor and comedian Robin Williams was traded for the role of the friendly giant.

In 2011 DreamWorks bought the film rights. Because DreamWorks had run into financial difficulties through previous film projects and failures, production was delayed. Nevertheless, the late screenwriter Melissa Mathison was eventually hired to write a screenplay. The project was also offered to several directors, including John Madden and Chris Columbus . In April 2014 it was announced that Steven Spielberg could finally be won over to direct. Frank Marshall, Spielberg and Sam Mercer act as producers and Kathleen Kennedy, Michael Siegel and John Madden are executive producers . In March 2015 it was announced that Walden Media would be co-producing the film.

In April 2015, it was also announced that Walt Disney Pictures would be co-financing and that it would be able to be won over as publisher to release the film in some countries. Although Spielberg has already made several films for Disney as a producer, The BFG is the first Disney cooperation with Spielberg as a director. The DreamWorks Studio producing the film is represented by the Amblin Partners brand, which was founded in December 2015 by Steven Spielberg, Jeff Skoll from Participant Media, Anil Ambani Reliance - Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group and Darren Throop from Entertainment One .

Casting

On October 27, 2014, it was announced that three-time Tony Award winner Mark Rylance, who starred in Spielberg's Bridge of Spies as a supporting actor, would take on the lead role of the friendly giant. Spielberg was quoted as saying that “Mark Rylance is a changeable actor. I am thrilled and very happy that Mark will take us on this trip to the giant country ”. The movements of Rylance were recorded using the motion capture process and the eight-meter-tall giant was subsequently animated on the computer. These visual effects for the animations were created by the New Zealand company Weta Digital . In December 2014, Spielberg announced that after an eight-month search, the leading actress for the role of Sophie in ten-year-old Brit Ruby Barnhill had been found. In a statement, Barnhill said, “Sophie is embarking on this wonderful adventure and I'm so excited to play her. I feel incredibly happy and so happy. ”It is her first role in a feature film . Spielberg said at the announcement: “We discovered a wonderful Sophie in Ruby Barnhill.” In April 2015, additional actors were announced in the cast list, including Bill Hader , Jemaine Clement and Rebecca Hall , Penelope Wilton as well as Adam Godley and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson .

Filming

The filming for The BFG with a budget of 140 million US dollars began on March 23, 2015 Vancouver , British Columbia in Canada , where interior shots in the Vancouver Film Studios were realized. In addition, filming took place on the Scottish island of Skye , during which the exterior shots for the "land of giants" were made. It was also in London , England , among other things on, Buckingham Palace and at Blenheim Palace in Woodstock in the county of Oxfordshire rotated. The entire shooting was completed on June 12, 2015.

An interesting detail is that the film was produced in different languages. In the German version, all labels, signs, texts and also Sophie's book, in which the giant is looking, are written in German.

Film music

After Spielberg's long-time film composer John Williams was unable to contribute the music to his film Bridge of Spies - The Negotiator for health reasons , but took over this task from Thomas Newman , he worked again with the director at The BFG for the background music for the film. It is the 27th collaboration between Williams and Spielberg for a feature film. The soundtrack album for the film was released on July 1, 2016 by Universal Music Group distribution .

criticism

Christoph Petersen from Filmstarts.de writes that the motion capture and CGI effects as well as the camera work by Janusz Kaminski are visually “simply breathtaking”. He also sums up: "Even more impressive than the pure technical brilliance is the seemingly inexhaustible creativity with which Spielberg stages his gigantic adventure."

He awards 4 out of 5 stars and draws the conclusion:

"Sometimes the central friendship and thus the actual core of the outsider fairy tale threatens to take a back seat to the visual intoxication - but ultimately this is prevented by the sheer presence of the two outstanding leading actors: The twelve-year-old Ruby Barnhill definitely has a great career as a child star in the house - apart from the classic Hollywood notions of "sweet", she acts with bold self-confidence and great emotional intelligence. [...] The newly crowned Oscar winner (for Spielberg's "Bridge Of Spies") gives the BFG a deep tragedy with his usual subtle performance (luckily the technology is so advanced that motion capturing no longer necessarily requires unrestrained overacting) and powerful seriousness. Nevertheless, he is always hilarious in the explosive pup scenes and with his interpretation of Dahl's fantasy language Gobblefunk (fingers crossed for the German version!). An especially visually groundbreaking movie fairy tale. "

Grossing results

The BFG stayed with 7 million US dollars revenue at the box office on the first day of the North American opening weekend far below expectations. From June 30 to July 4, 2016, the film grossed just $ 26.8 million worldwide. North America accounted for 22.7 million US dollars and the international territories around 4.1 million US dollars. In the USA and Canada he grossed a total of around 55.5 million US dollars. The global box office gross of approximately $ 183.4 million since the film was released. (As of June 2017)

Differences from the novel

  • In Roald Dahl's book, the character Sophie is eight years old, while in the film she is ten years old.
  • In the novel, Sophie lives with nine other girls in a small orphanage in a village, while in the film she lives in a large and rustic orphanage in London. However, it is mentioned in the book by Sophie that she had lived in a London orphanage a year earlier.
  • The end of the story has been changed from the original book so that Sophie is adopted in the film by the maid Mary and the butler Mr. Tibbs and henceforth lives in Buckingham Palace, while the girl in the novel stays with the friendly giant and gives him tutoring in talking and Writing there.
  • The evil giants are banished to a remote island in the film, while in the book they are thrown into a deep pit (also together with vomit pickles)
