In the Atlantic Ocean , an oil rig is attacked by a giant lizard-like monster and sunk. The military then starts a search mission for survivors. The operation is led by Admiral Hadley. NASA is also involved in the mission under the direction of Dr. Margaret Adams. The agency uses its top secret Armada program to search : giant, human-controlled robots for operations under and above water. The machines are piloted by pilots Red, Tracey and Jim. At the site of the oil rig, the robots dive to the sea floor at a depth of 1.5 kilometers, where they encounter the monster. The creature flees from them, and contrary to the admiral's express orders, Red sets off in pursuit towards the coast. Red leaves the ocean on the beach in a coastal city, revealing the secret of the top secret robots. He is attacked by the giant lizard and a fight ensues, causing great damage to the city. With the help of the fighter pilot Spitfire, who attacks the lizard with rockets, Red manages to kill the monster. Nevertheless, shortly afterwards he was arrested by the military police for not obeying orders.
Meanwhile, Admiral Hadley learns that two eggs of this unknown species have been discovered during a top-secret sonar mission. The creature just killed hatched from one of the two, but the second giant lizard has also hatched and is attacking a US Navy fleet off the east coast of the United States. Jim and Tracey manage to free Red and let the robots fight the monster again. Military Geise urges the President of the United States to authorize a nuclear attack to destroy the monster, but Admiral Hadley prevents it. The robots manage to defeat the giant lizard with air support from B-2 stealth bombers .
Shortly afterwards it is announced that a third specimen of the monster lizard has appeared, which is heading for New York . Red, Tracey and Jim receive a so far unchecked update on their combat robots. For this purpose, they are connected directly to the machines via their nervous system by means of headbands, which results in significantly better controllability, but the pilots now also suffer physical pain if the robots are damaged. It comes to the fight against the even larger creature in the middle of New York. Geise now has a nuclear warhead launched from a submarine heading for the city. Lieutenant Wexler manages to overcome Geise; Meanwhile, Red succeeds in intercepting the nuclear missile and transporting it into space with the giant lizard, where the monster is killed by the nuclear explosion.

The cinema editors rate Atlantic Rim with a thumbs down and draw the conclusion: " Asylum films - a horror in itself ..." The kino.de site considers the film to be a "good-natured trash spectacle from The Asylum" and judges: "Predictable and cheesy, but also effective and entertaining." Moviejones.de certifies that Atlantic Rim is very similar to its role model Pacific Rim , "just without a budget, without real actors and without great effects."
