The big friendly giant (Alternative title: Sophie and the big friendly giant , Original Title: The BFG ) is a British Animation - TV movie from the year 1987 and based on the novel The BFG by Roald Dahl . Directed by Brian Cosgrove and written by John Hambley .

action

At midnight in the orphanage , little Sophie wakes up and wants to know what happens during the witching hour. From the window she sees a large black figure who walks around the houses and does strange things by the windows of the other houses. The black figure notices Sophiechen, extends her big hand into the room and kidnaps the little girl.

The next morning, Sophiechen is in a huge cave with correspondingly large shelves, glasses and chairs. It shows a giant with big ears. At first Sophie believes that the giant wants to eat her, but the giant shows himself to be very friendly. The giant calls himself the Grofreuri (big friendly giant) and only kidnapped her because she had watched him. Giants are not meant to be seen because humans could hunt and kill them.

Sophiechen tells him that he kidnapped her from an orphanage and that she is happy about it. Thereupon the Grofreuri and Sophiechen become friends. But in the giant country there are nine other giants who have no friendly intentions. They are even bigger than Grofreuri, ugly and passionate ogres. They travel around the world to drag people out of their homes at night and then eat them. They despise Grofreuri because he doesn't eat people and is friendly. Grofreuri feeds on so-called red beets and bubbling water so that it can make funny fart trees ( flatulence ). He explains to Sophie that the canning jars contain dreams that he had cremated from the dreamland and he moves to the cities at night, pours the dreams into the trumpet, blows them into the houses and thus brings beautiful dreams to the sleeping people. Sophiechen wants to get Grofreuri to do something against the evil giants. Finally, with the help of the Queen of England, they can stop all the giants. The Queen offers Sophie to live in her palace from now on. Little Sophie, however, decides to stay with her friend Grofreuri and travels with him back to the vast country.

The big, friendly giant achieved a value of 6.7 with over 4,600 reviews at the IMDb . In rotten tomatoes no reviews are deposited, but the film obtained by the spectators a value of 6.5. (As of July 2016)

The film was nominated for the 1990 British Academy Television Award for Best Children's Program.
