action

Peter Pan has left "Never Land" and is now a married middle-aged lawyer with two children who has forgotten his own childhood and adventure. The bold boy Peter Pan has become the nervous, irritable and insecure lawyer Peter Banning (who, to top it all, is not free from vertigo). His old nemesis Captain Hook but meditates in Neverland still on revenge, after he once lost a hand in the fight against Peter, who now by a screwed prosthesis - the hook (Engl. Hook has been replaced -). So he kidnaps the two children of the Banning couple, Maggie and Jack, into the Hidden World in order to alienate them from their father. Peter is therefore "dragged" back to Neverland by the fairy bell to free his children.

The “lost boys” living there cannot initially recognize Peter Pan in the adult man. But with the help of the fairy and some of the boys, he remembers his childhood adventures and friends, regains his childish imagination and learns to fight and fly again. Now he can become the leader again, which has been Rufio since Peter's departure from Neverland. So he can ultimately go into the decisive battle against the pirates for the fate of the kidnapped children and for the fate of Neverland. The gang of children fights with effective, imaginative, but not lethal weapons. Not until the climax of the battle is Rufio killed by Captain Hook's sword. In the end, after a final duel, this is swallowed by the stuffed crocodile that had eaten his hand.

After a victorious battle, Peter Pan returns home to look after his family - now as a Peter Banning who remembers the adventures of childhood.

Reviews

“A naive fairy tale that is exhausted in an abundance of pompous and insane gags, stunts and trick effects. The now well-known Spielberg philosophy of amazement, which is actually only possible for children (in an intact family), the film can only win a few lovable moments, whereby the spectacular rollercoaster ride allows neither fairytale poetry nor real humor. "

“Hook is the first real-life adaptation of the adventures of Peter Pan, who competes with the lost boys against Captain Hook and his pirates. Steven Spielberg's film illuminates a time in which Peter Pan has grown up and can therefore convince with a new story. An all-round coherent and successful adventure, which with its crazy gags should not only please young viewers. "

Trivia

  • The script is not just an independent continuation of a literature model; it also includes this cultural asset as part of the plot, because in the cinematic reality there are also children's stories about Peter Pan.
  • The film should actually contain a lot of musicals. In the end, however, director Steven Spielberg cut out all nine scenes.
  • While filming, Julia Roberts had to be hospitalized with a nervous breakdown.
  • Due to the delays in filming, the composer John Williams was forced to compose almost two thirds of the film music from the script without being able to see the scenes that were filmed. All he could do was make adjustments when he finally had the appropriate scenes.
  • The film grossed over $ 300 million worldwide.
  • Only the release on Blu-ray and the much sharper image show that the film crew is involved in countless scenes (e.g. the hook is used in the dark, Hook's appearance in front of the team with the close-up on the hook, ... ) is reflected on the shiny metal of Hook's hooked hand.
  • Steven Spielberg and John Williams originally planned to turn the material into a musical. From the sketches, the song When You're Alone , which was nominated for an Oscar and was written by Leslie Bricusse and composed by Williams, made it into the film.
