Terry Brooks (2016)

Terry Brooks actually, Terence Dean Brooks (* 8. January 1944 in Sterling , Illinois , USA ) is an American fantasy - author .

Life

Brooks was already creative as a teenager. During his school days he was enthusiastic about the author William Faulkner , later as a student the book The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien had a great influence on him. When The Sword of Shannara came out in 1977 and was sold successfully, he gave up his profession as a lawyer and devoted himself exclusively to writing.

Since then, The Sword of Shannara initially became a trilogy , followed by other sub-series, which in the course of the following decades resulted in an extensive saga with dozens of novels, which was also adapted in the television series The Shannara Chronicles . In addition to the Shannara saga as his main work, there is another fantasy series with the Landover cycle. Brooks also wrote adaptations of the novel to Spielberg's Peter Pan adaptation Hook and The Phantom Menace , the first part of George Lucas' second Star Wars trilogy .

In 2017 Brooks received the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Shannara saga

The novel The Sword of Shannara (1977) was written at a time when the modern genre of fantasy was just emerging and was still heavily influenced by Tolkien's success. Terry Brooks' book is one of the clearest proofs of this: it is almost a detailed copy of the plot and motifs of the Lord of the Rings over long stretches . This culminates in a scene in which the wise advisor to the adventure community falls into a ravine fighting a henchman of evil and only reappears later (a copy of the fight between Tolkien's character Gandalf and the Balrog ). The figure of the wandering king who has recaptured his throne also appears in the figure of a Balinor Buckhannah.

It was only in his second part of the series Die Elfensteine von Shannara that Brooks emancipated himself more clearly from his role model, for example by building more female actors as protagonists.

When the first parts of the saga were translated into German, they were divided into three or two books respectively, so that, for example, the three volumes of the original edition of the first trilogy appeared in German as nine (relatively narrow) paperbacks.

Sub-series and chronology

Sword of Shannara trilogy
  • I Sword of Shannara deals with the last 100 years before the disappearance of the last druid Allanon.
  • II The Elfensteine of Shannara is about 50 years after the sword of Shannara .
  • III The magic song of Shannara is about 20 years after the Elfensteins of Shannara .
Heirs to Shannara tetralogy

The tetralogy is located about 300 years after the magic song of Shannara .

First King of Shannara - The outcasts of Shannara (prequel single novel)

The prehistory to the sword of Shannara takes place about 500 years before it. Since the book was written later, it contains information that is not yet available at the beginning of the Sword of Shannara trilogy.

The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara - The journey of the Jerle Shannara

The journey of the Jerle Shannara is about 130 years after the legacy-of-Shannara tetralogy.

High Druid of Shannara - The magicians of Shannara

The magician of Shannara is located approximately 20 years after the journey of the Jerle Shannara .

Genesis of Shannara - The Great Wars

The Great Wars represent the connection between the Word / Void trilogy and the Shannara cycle. They take place in a post-apocalyptic world around the year 2092 (and thus around 2000 years before the events in the sword of Shannara ), in which the great governments perished and many parts of the world are uninhabited. The few surviving people live in so-called compounds (fortified cities or squares) and try to preserve part of their world there. The Knights of the Word are there to help, even if the people from these fortified places of residence show them little friendliness. In addition to the people in the compounds, there are also many who have been so changed by the toxins and diseases that contributed to great devastation in the Great Wars that they are physically little like humans. They are outcasts and freaks .

Two knights of the word are Logan Tom and Angel Perez, who both get an assignment from the lady. There are also the ghosts, a gang of children who live in Seattle and fight for their survival there. Opposite them are the demons and their servants: the erstwhile humans. They have been corrupted by the demons, have no will of their own and represent the armies of the demons.

The legend of Shannara

The legend of Shannara is set about 500 years after the Great Wars .

The dark gift of Shannara

The dark gift of Shannara is located approximately 100 years after The Magi of Shannara .

The Fall of Shannara

Planned as a tetralogy , these novels are to form the chronological conclusion of the Shannara cycle, although Brooks does not rule out the possibility of further stories being published. New novels would take place accordingly between the existing sections.

The Word & the Void - Word / Void cycle

The Word / Void cycle takes place in a contemporary world very similar to ours. In this, however, there are also demons, forest rascals, eaters (invisible beings for people who are not gifted with magic and who feed on the suffering and pain of people) and gifted magic - one of these is Nest Freemark, the main character in the series. She is the seventh freemark woman to own magic and use it to prevent demons and eaters from gaining the upper hand. John Ross, a knight of the word, is also on the side of the good, but always a little distant. He serves the lady who represents the word and fights against the void. While John Ross tries to keep Nest on the good side, demons try to get her or other magicians on their side.

In terms of time, this series takes place before the Shannara saga. Originally written as two separate and independent series, the Word / Void cycle and the Shannara saga were later merged into one series by The Great Wars . Demon Summer takes place in 1997 (and thus approx. 95 years before The Great Wars or 2095 years before The Sword of Shannara ), City of Demons in 2002 and Demon Fire in 2012.

Film adaptations

Terry Brooks has expressed interest in having his books filmed on several occasions. Warner Bros. had acquired the rights to the Shannara series and was planning a feature film, but the plans were discarded and the film rights went back to the author in August 2010. Since 2012 there have been plans to produce both feature films for the Landover series and a TV series for the Shannara series in the style of Game of Thrones . In July 2014, MTV commissioned the 10 episodes of the planned adaptation of The Elfensteine von Shannara . On November 13, 2014, it was announced that Poppy Drayton would play the lead role as Amberle Elessedil in this film adaptation. Other roles known so far are Manu Bennett, known from The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, as Druid Allanon, Austin Butler as Wil Ohmsford, Aaron Jakubenko as Elven Prince Ander Elessedil and John Rhys-Davies , who played the dwarf Gimli in The Lord of the Rings , as the Elven King Eventine Elessedil.

The 10-part series was broadcast weekly on MTV in America from January 5, 2016 under the title The Shannara Chronicles . In Germany, Amazon broadcast the episodes one day later as video-on-demand via its streaming service Amazon Prime Video. The series was broadcast on German free TV on RTL II from May 10, 2016.

On the occasion of the start of the series, the trilogy The Sword of Shannara will be reissued as a two-part series called The Chronicles of Shannara - The Sword of the Elves , and The Elf Stones of Shannara as a two-part series called The Shannara Chronicles - Elf Stones .
