John Rhys-Davies (born May 5, 1944 in Ammanford , Wales ) is a British actor .

Life

Born in Welsh, John Rhys-Davies spent his childhood in England , Wales and Africa . His parents, Phyllis and Rhys Davies, moved with him to Tanzania , where his father was stationed as an officer. Rhys-Davies later attended a private school in England. At the age of 13 he was already playing in Shakespeare plays at the Truro School in Cornwall . He deepened his passion for literature with a degree in history and English literature at the University of East Anglia in Norwich , where he founded the University Dramatic Society and began his stage career at the Maddermarket Theater . After a year-long interlude as a teacher, he took acting lessons at the renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London , where he graduated in 1969. As a result, John Rhys-Davies played in various theater ensembles and was part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's ensemble for several seasons . His repertoire included Shakespeare roles such as Falstaff , Othello and Macbeth .

Since the early 1970s, John Rhys-Davies has been one of the hardest-working actors in Europe and the US, with more than 1200 appearances in film and television. His first small television role was in the British series Crossroads in 1964 , but it wasn't until seven years later, in 1971, that other roles followed on television. He had his first and very brief appearance in the film in 1974 in The Black Windmill . He has made numerous guest appearances on television series, including Agent with a Heart , Murder Is Her Hobby, and Star Trek: Spaceship Voyager as Leonardo da Vinci . His best-known roles include Sallah in Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones films Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), the dwarf Gimli and gave the Ent Treebeard his voice in Peter Jackson's Lord -Ringe trilogy (2001-2003) as well as the role of Professor Maximilian Arturo in the sci-fi television series Sliders - The Gate into a Foreign Dimension and the role as General Leonid Pushkin (as successor to General Gogol) in the film James Bond 007 - The breath of death . For his role as Portuguese captain Rodrigues in the miniseries Shogun , he was nominated for an Emmy in 1981 for best supporting actor . In 2004 he and his fellow actors from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King received the Screen Actors Guild Award for best ensemble performance . He also frequently works as a voice actor for animation films and video games.

John Rhys-Davies is missing the first joint of his left middle finger - seen for example in the film Swords of the King - Dungeon Siege - which he lost when replacing a van engine. He was glued to a gel prosthesis for his role in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

John Rhys-Davies lives in Los Angeles and on the Isle of Man , where he has set up a film studio. Rhys-Davies has two sons.
