The Lost World (Original title: The Lost World ) is a Canadian - American adventure film based on the book by Arthur Conan Doyle The Forgotten World . In contrast to previous films, the plot was moved from South America to Africa ( Zimbabwe ). The successor is return to the lost world .

action

The eccentric and crazy scientist Professor Challenger is planning an expedition to Africa. Disguised as an Italian reporter, the journalist Edward Malone will learn more. Challenger distrusts the English media. Since Malone, unlike Challenger, does not speak Italian, he is quickly exposed by the latter, but Challenger can still impress. He tells Malone that a long time ago in Africa he got hold of a map that leads to a secret high plateau . Prehistoric life is said to exist there to this day. At that time, Challenger was attacked by one of his companions, so that he could only catch a glimpse of the plateau due to his injury and could not climb it. Still, he undoubtedly recognized a pterodactyl .

In a session at the Natural History Museum , Professor Summerlee is honored for his work. During the festivities, Challenger bursts into the premises and accuses his rival of feasting on Challenger's work. Then he tries to convince the people present to send an expedition to Africa. Summerlee agrees, but only if he is allowed to take the lead and Challenger does not participate. The journalist Malone, the rich photographer Jenny Nielson and the 13-year-old Jimmy, who has secretly sneaked onto the ship, also take part in the expedition.

Once in Africa, the card turns out to be useless. To everyone's surprise, Challenger shows up and takes part in the expedition after all, as he is the only one who knows the way. The group is accompanied by Malu, a local, Gomez, the leader of the porters and a number of porters. Once at the plateau, with the exception of the porters, the group climbs up the plateau under the guidance of Gomez. Now Gomez turns out to be the brother of the one who wanted to kill Challenger at the time and who paid for this attempt with his own life. Gomez chases the porters away and cuts the rope so that the group is stuck on the plateau.

The next day the group decides to look for a way down. After a nightly attack by a dinosaur, the group is split up and all but Malone, Malu and Jimmy are arrested by evil locals, the skeleton people. People adore the predatory dinosaurs and have painted themselves like skeletons. The skeleton people feed one person to the predatory dinosaurs every day to calm them down. Malone, Malu and Jimmy manage to distract the skeleton people so that the group can escape. One of the liberated is the chief of a second, peaceful tribe. Originally the two groups were one. To help a sick pterodactyl, Summerlee steals medicinal herbs from the skeleton people's warehouse and manages to cure the pterosaur. The theft provokes an attack by the skeleton people, with their leader dying. Without a leader, the skeleton people decide to rejoin their former tribe. The tribal leader of the natives Palala shows the group a secret path that leads away from the plateau. As a thank you, he just wanted all group members to return in case the lost world was in trouble. All agree. At the exit, Gomez now finally wants to take revenge on Challenger, but is shot by him.

Once in London, Challenger and Summerlee present their research results. However, these are not judged to be credible. Malone and Jimmy then bring the recovered pterosaur into the hall as evidence. Then the team is congratulated. Since the pterodactylus are locked in the zoo, Malone, Jimmy and Jenny decide to free the pterosaur. This then flies towards the sea.

Characters

Professor George Challenger and Professor Leo Summerlee are rivals and very different in their research methods. Challenger is someone who takes part in expeditions and does research on site. Summerlee is more of a lecturer and describes finds. Despite differences and a feud in England, they appreciate each other very much on the plateau and work closely together. Edward Malone is a bored journalist who wants to cover something exciting. He has been friends with Jimmy for a long time and is committed to ensuring that Jimmy is allowed to accompany the group despite his status as a stowaway. Jenny Nielson comes from a wealthy house in the USA. She is a hobby photographer and finances the expedition. It replaces the hunter Lord John Roxton from the book.

Prehistoric animals

Representation of the primeval animals

The animals in the film correspond to the approximate state of research from the 80s. So the dinosaurs are represented slightly stupid. The tyrannosaurus and anatosaurs have a very upright posture and all dinosaurs drag their tails on the ground. It is also claimed that the pterosaurs are the ancestors of birds . Today it is believed that birds evolved from dinosaurs.

reception

"Unfortunately, bad dinosaur films never die out"
