action
Jeff Pierce, a former member of a US special forces unit, sets off for Pompeii with his wife Lynne and daughter Mykaela. While Jeff takes care of the handling of a last assignment in nearby Naples , his wife and daughter examine the remains of Pompeii in a tourist group. But the tour is quickly disrupted by a massive eruption of Mount Vesuvius , which dwarfs all previous ones and results in enormous amounts of lava and ash as well as pyroclastic flows . Surprised by the eruption, Lynne and Mykaela, like other tourists, set out to escape the deadly force of nature. Jeff, who gets wind of the events all too quickly, tries to coordinate a rescue operation with the help of soldiers stationed nearby, including the chief of his former unit, Colonel Carlo Dillard. However, since the volcanic activity is anything but weaker and most of the access to his cut-off family is blocked, a merciless race against time begins for the ex-soldier.
reception
Apocalypse Pompeii earned only weak to bad ratings, mostly in connection with criticized acting performances, a great similarity to other, genre-like works as well as clichéd and predictable storylines. The connection to earlier The Asylum productions was also named, which the program magazine TV Spielfilm , which gave the strip a symbolic “thumbs down”, concluded that “the cheap films from the Asylum studios ... the same crap as always [ mortise] ”, expressed.
"[...] Boring teenage screeching in the guise of a disaster film [...] The story of 'Apocalypse Pompeii' offers ... nothing that has not already been told hundreds of times in similar films: an unpredictable catastrophe, a few teenagers in danger, a Father, who tries to survive all adversities as a savior, and finally a lot of ashes and dust (in bad CGI clothing) [...] What [The Asylum] delivers here with 'Apocalypse Pompeii' ... matches the word 'underground ' barely."
Kino.de describes the film as an "uninhibited [es] trashy [es] catastrophe adventure for genre viewers".
