Suddenly Princess 2 (Original title: The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement ) is a 2004 comedy film directed by Garry Marshall and starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews . It is the sequel to the 2001 film Princess Suddenly .
action
It's been five years since Mia found out she was Princess of Genovia. Now her grandmother has decided to abdicate in favor of Mia, since Mia has reached the age necessary for the coronation with her 21st birthday.
At the ball that is held for Mia's birthday, Mia meets Lord Nicholas and feels drawn to him. The evening after the ball, there is a parliamentary session, in which it is decided that Mia must either marry within a month or renounce the throne of Genovia in favor of Lord Nicholas, since a law applies in Genovia which says that female heirs to the throne marry must be before they become queen. Realizing that an arranged marriage is her only chance at becoming queen, Mia becomes engaged, albeit reluctantly, to the charming Andrew Jacoby, Duke of Kenilworth. In the course of the film, however, she realizes that her heart belongs to Nicholas. However, Nicholas, instigated by his uncle, Viscount Mabrey, to seduce Mia to guide her away from Andrew, falls in love with her. Mia now reciprocates these feelings.
Clarisse and her security chief Joe have been together for five years now, but now that Clarisse wants to abdicate, Joe asks her not to hide the relationship between the two any longer. Clarisse, however, after careful consideration, puts duty to her country before love, which causes Joe to end the relationship. Clarisse is upset about this.
Meanwhile, Mia is struggling with whether or not to marry Andrew even though she loves Nicholas. It is only when Nicholas appears to have betrayed her that she decides to marry. On the way to the altar, however, she doubts whether she is really doing the right thing. She escapes outside and is just trying to calm down when her grandmother shows up and advises her not to make the same mistake as she, namely to put the duty to the country before love. Mia then enters the church again and tells Andrew that she would rather wait for true love, whereupon the two of them cancel the wedding. Mia now “enforces” the parliamentary decree that an unmarried woman can also become queen. Clarisse and Joe are reconciled when Clarisse proposes marriage to him and the two eventually marry. Shortly before her coronation as queen, Lord Nicholas visits Mia to confess his love to her. They happily embrace and kiss. The film ends with Mia's coronation as Queen of Genovia.
Trivia
- The role of Charlotte is again played by Kathleen Marshall , the director's daughter. Garry Marshall himself has a brief cameo as a drummer in the film (together with Charles Minsky ).
- Opera singer Anna Netrebko can be seen in the film and sings the title Semper Libera by Giuseppe Verdi from La traviata .
- Queen Clarisse's phrase, "I flew a lot when I was young" is a reference to Julie Andrews ' role as Mary Poppins .
- Stan Lee has a brief guest role in the film as the man who learned English by reading comics . In the original English language, he learned his English through The Three Stooges films.
Differences to the book template
The plot in the film is opposite to that of the book Power, Princess! Greatly changed by Meg Cabot .
- Genovia is a principality and not a kingdom in the book , which is why Mia cannot be queen at all.
- Mia is only 14 in the books. From book 3 ( Princess Seeks Prince ) she is with Michael Moscovitz. Her mother is married to Frank Gianini. Her half-brother Rocky Thermopolis-Gianini will not be born until Book 5 ( Princess in Pink ).
- Clarisse is much stricter in the book and has no lover or new husband. In addition, Mia does not live in Genovia, but in New York because she does not want to move to Genovia.
criticism
"The film, which is essentially conventional, is full of charming staging details and thrives on the comedy of the precisely drawn supporting roles."
“The candy-colored sequel to the fairy tale hit from 2001 is just as unimaginative as its title. Director Garry Marshall has an important message for his audience: "It is not the right hairstyle that makes a good person, but belief in yourself." Then why does the princess' walk-in closet take up more space than her character formation? And while Julie Andrews ("Mary Poppins"), the royal grandmother, still gave the predecessor class, her benevolent smile is frozen here into a mask. [...] Plump retort cinema - not even the Prince Charming will make your heart flutter. "
"Charming and extremely funny, Marshall clarifies the question of the succession to the throne, spices it up with a little romance, a little intrigue, a pinch of envy and lots of fun and surprises."
