Shonda Rhimes (born January 13, 1970 in Chicago ) is an American screenwriter and television series producer, best known as the creator of the doctor / hospital series Grey's Anatomy , its spin-off Private Practice and the political thriller series Scandal . She also produces the hit series How to Get Away with Murder .

Professional background

Shonda Rhimes attended some Catholic schools. She graduated from Dartmouth College . She later worked in a Chicago hospital as a so-called Candy Striper (intern). In 1998 Shonda Rhimes wrote her first screenplay for the film Blossoms & Veils , followed four years later for Suddenly Princess 2 and Not a Girl - Crossroads with Britney Spears . In 2005 her series Grey's Anatomy started , originally intended as a bridge between two seasons of Boston Legal , but due to the great success the series was included in the program of the US broadcaster ABC .

In 2007, Private Practice , a spin-off from the Grey's Anatomy series , was developed by Shonda Rhimes. The short-lived doctor series Off the Map followed in 2011 and Scandal with Kerry Washington in the lead role in 2012 , both of which also ran on ABC.

In the fall of 2014, Rhimes' crime series How to Get Away with Murder started very successfully on ABC with Viola Davis in the lead role.
