Journey back in time (Original title: Waxwork ) is an American horror film with Zach Galligan and Deborah Foreman from 1988 . In 1991 the sequel Spaceshift followed .

action

Sarah Brightman and her friend China Webster are invited to a private tour of a recently opened wax museum and are expected to bring four more friends. Her choice falls on Mark Loftmore, a wealthy rebel, Tony, Gemma and James. At midnight they go to the wax museum, but James and Gemma are scared and leave relatively quickly. Tony is dragged into an exhibit and ends up in a werewolf story . After his death he becomes part of the scenery. It is the same with China, which becomes part of a vampire story . Sarah wants to take a closer look at the Marquis de Sade , but Mark urges them to leave the property.

The next day, Sarah and Mark notice the disappearance of their friends and inform Detective Roberts, who takes a closer look at the wax museum, but is appeased by the owner Lincoln. Meanwhile, China's friend also examines the wax museum, but becomes a victim of Lincoln, who pushes him to the Phantom of the Opera . Detective Roberts later returns alone to take a sample of China's face. However, he is caught and ends up in ancient Egypt , where a mummy has just risen. So he too becomes a victim of Lincoln.

In Mark's grandfather's attic, Mark and Sarah discover an old newspaper clipping with a picture of Lincoln. With the help of Sir Wilfred, a confidante of Mark's grandfather and family friend, they can uncover Lincoln's plan. Lincoln needed 18 deaths within three periods of time ( 6 and 6 and 6 ) to bring the wax figures to life and thus initiate the apocalypse. He's already murdered six people twice, so time is of the essence. Sarah and Mark now want to put an end to it all and burn the wax figures.

In the wax museum, however, they are pushed into the rooms separately. While Sarah is willing to be whipped at the Marquis, Mark tries to escape from a Night-of-the-Living-Dead scene. He actually manages to break the illusion and escape through willpower. Next, he frees Sarah from the Marquis' clutches. Back in the cabinet, however, the two are captured and two more victims ring in the apocalypse. Just as the wax figures come to life, Sir Wilfred arrives with his followers and a battle of good against evil breaks out. The wax museum catches fire. Mark and Sarah are the only people who can escape. But a severed hand follows them.

background

Director Anthony Hickox wrote the script for Journey Back In Time within three days. He managed to engage a number of well-known actors and guest stars for the film. The main actor Zach Galligan had had a similar role in the horror comedy Gremlins four years earlier . You can also see John Rhys-Davies , Miles O'Keeffe and Patrick Macnee . Bob Keen was responsible for the special effects .

publication

Journey back in time was released in Germany as a video premiere by Vestron Entertainment. The version was greatly shortened, but was still indexed . However, the successor Spaceshift contained some of the shortened passages in a flashback of the German rental version . In addition to some bootlegs , an unabridged new edition was published in 2003 by Dragon Entertainment. Epix released a remake of the film in 2010 as the first part of their "Twilight Classics" series. The film was removed from the indexing list and the voluntary self-regulation of the film industry reassessed the film. The unabridged version is now released from the age of 16 .

criticism

Director Anthony Hickox is the son of Douglas Hickox , who satirically prepared a similar topic with Theater des Horens . Similar to his father, Hickox uses satirical elements to accompany his horror comedy, although he is not very subtle. At one point you see a history teacher in front of a swastika flag , his right arm involuntarily twitching in the Hitler salute. Therefore, the horror comedy was sometimes referred to as slapstick . Because of the successful homage to horror and horror films of the 20th century, the film was mostly described as successful.

"A film peppered with genre recitals that doesn't want to be taken too seriously, but goes to work very seriously in the staging of its special effects."

"Anthony Hickox, director of this successful mixture of horror, thriller and comedy, is following in the footsteps of his father Douglas."
