Joseph Henry "Joe" Baker (born July 17, 1940 in Liverpool , † October 6, 2003 in Wishaw ) was an English - Scottish football player and coach .

life and career

Baker grew up in the Scottish town of Motherwell . Although he spent his childhood in the northern region of the British Isles, he was only able to play for the English national football team because of his birthplace Liverpool . The center-forward began his career at Hibernian Edinburgh in 1957 and was the top scorer of the Scottish Football League in the seasons 1958/59 and 1959/60 . The "English Scot" made his debut for England in 1959 against Northern Ireland . Baker became the first England international to have never played in the country before he was called up. The next to succeed in this feat was the native Canadian Owen Hargreaves more than 40 years later. In 1961 he moved to Italy for AC Turin . During his time at the boot, Baker was seriously injured in a car accident . The Englishman was driving on the wrong side of a roundabout, came to the curb, and overturned the car. He nearly died in that car accident. In July 1962 he made his comeback. Baker played from this time at Arsenal FC in London . The Gunners then paid the record transfer fee of £ 7,500. He made his debut on August 18, 1962 against Leyton Orient . After four successful years at Highbury , Baker joined Nottingham Forest in 1966 . With his new team he reached the runner-up in his first season in the Football League First Division 1966/67 . His last three active positions were at Sunderland AFC , Hibernian Edinburgh again, and from 1972 to 1974 he ended his career with Raith Rovers . In total, Baker played 500 games and scored 294 goals. Internationally, he was called up eight times for the English national football team. His brother Gerry Baker was also a professional footballer and played for Manchester City , Ipswich Town and Coventry City . He later coached the Albion Rovers for two more years, established a pub and worked for Hibernian Edinburgh. Joe Baker died in 2003 after suffering a heart attack during a charity golf tournament.
