Edward Ashley-Cooper (born August 12, 1904 in Sydney , New South Wales , † May 5, 2000 in San Diego , California ; actually Edward Montague Hussey Cooper ) was an Australian actor of British descent.

life and career

Edward Ashley-Cooper was born in Australia to a British family. His father was in the Navy. In the 1930s, Edward Ashley starred in British films and was considered a popular actor. In 1940 he came to the United States for the literary film adaptation Pride and Prejudice , where he used Mr. Wickham alongside Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier . This remained the high point of his Hollywood career for a long time, as Ashley was "one of many good-looking English people who wandered around the MGM studios, so his studio used him in whatever was needed." So he only got in Rarely played leading roles, instead he mostly played the main actor's sidekick or the film villain.

In the Tarzan films Tarzan in Danger (1948) and Tarzan and the Jungle Goddess (1951), Ashley played the role of District Chairman Connors at the side of Johnny Weissmüller . Since he had a certain resemblance to his Australian compatriot Errol Flynn , he delivered in the comedy Der Hofnarr (1955) as rebel leader "Black Fox" from a parody of his Robin Hood image. In the 1950s and 1960s, Ashley made guest roles on numerous television programs. Without ever achieving the big Hollywood star breakout, Ashley's film career lasted for nearly six decades. He had his last of a total of over 70 film appearances in 1988 in the horror film Journey back in time in a supporting role as a professor.

In the 1930s, Ashley-Cooper married his fellow actress Nora Swinburne , and they divorced in 1938. They had a child. In 1943 Ashley married Renee Torres (* 1911), with whom he was married for over 55 years until her death in 1998. Edward Ashley died on May 5, 2000 at the age of 95, just four days after the death of his first wife, Nora. He was buried at sea.
