action
prehistory
The world was destroyed during the Great Wars . Weapons of mass destruction made large parts of the world uninhabitable and humanity also changed physiologically, so that finally new races such as dwarves, gnomes and trolls emerged; the elves who previously lived in secret revealed themselves. At the same time, a large part of the technology was lost, which is why mankind was thrown back into a medieval world.
During the war of the demon lord , the young half-elf Shea Ohmsford, who grew up as a foundling among humans, learns that he is descended from the elven royal line of Shannara. Because of this inheritance, he becomes involved in the events of the war and finally manages to defeat the demon lord Brona. This story is told in the novel The Sword of Shannara . The television series begins a generation later. Wil Ohmsford, Shea's son, is one of the main characters there.
season 1
The Ellcrys tree protects the world from the demons in the ostracism - are banned - within the tree. The elves of the city of Arborlon have tended the tree for a long time, but the tree becomes sick and threatens to die. The only way to save the tree is to have its chosen guardians bring its seed to the blood fire ; but nobody knows where this legendary place is.
Due to the disease of the tree, the druid Dagda Mor , who has fallen into evil and who became the ruler of the demons, as well as some of the demons can escape from the forbidden; a shapeshifter demon kills six of the tree's seven guardians to prevent the Ellcry from healing. The only surviving Guardian is Amberle, granddaughter of the Elven King Eventine Elessedil, who left her home because of tormenting visions of the destruction of Arborlon. The last druid Allanon, who has great knowledge, rushes to the aid of his friend Eventine and the elves after 30 years of druid sleep. The half-elf Wil Ohmsford - son of the legendary Shea from the Shannara family - becomes his apprentice. Allanon asks Wil Ohmsford to escort Amberle back to Arborlon. Wil inherited three magical Elfenstones from his father and thus has the potential to become a powerful wizard.
From Arborlon, Amberle and Wil, accompanied by some elven soldiers and the captured gypsy Eretria, who had tried to steal the valuable elf stones, set out to look for the blood fire. They are persecuted by demons and captured by gypsies because of the elf stones. But Eretria, who wants to leave her community and join the search for the blood fire, helps them to escape. Allanon, however, remains in Arborlon with the elves who are preparing for a war with the demons; these gather in great numbers with their prince Dagda Mor. The shapeshifter demon kills and takes over King Eventine to give Dagda Mor his sword, which was hidden under the elven castle. Ander can kill the shapeshifter and - after the deaths of Arion and Eventine Elessedil - is crowned the new king of the elves. Finally Amberle, Wil, Eretria and their foster father Cephalo arrive with a sapling from the Ellcry to the wild forest , where the blood fire is said to be. After crossing a tunnel ( Sichermal ) Amberle, Wil and Eretria arrive at the blood fire, where Amberle learns that she herself will be the sapling of a new Ellcry while the demon army marches around Dagda Mor to Arborlon. An alliance of elves and gnomes defends the palace; before Amberle can reach the Ellcrys, the Dagda Mor fights first against Allanon and later against Wil to stop the princess. Allanon can kill the demon ruler, Amberle becomes the new Ellcrys and the demons are again banished as leaves in the tree. Finally, Wil goes in search of Eretria, who was captured by trolls on the way back.
