The film is based on the musical West Side Story

The film is based on the musical West Side Story with music by Leonard Bernstein , lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents . The choreographer and producer Jerome Robbins approached Bernstein in the late 1940s to bring a modern version of Romeo and Juliet to the stage, albeit as a musical that shouldn't come too close to the opera. Together they developed a concept for the "East Side Story". The love story told in it takes place against the background of a gang war between rival ethnic youth gangs, on the one hand the US American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.

The musical was in the early 1960s by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins filmed , with Natalie Wood as Maria, Richard Beymer as Tony and Rita Moreno as Anita.
