Pieter Gerardus van Os (born October 8, 1776 in The Hague ; † March 28, 1839 there ) was a Dutch animal and landscape painter, etcher and lithographer.

Van Os was born as the son of Jan van Os and Susanna de la Croix and brother of George Jacobus Johannes van Os and Maria Margaretha van Os. He studied with his father and from 1794 to 1795 at the Teken Academy in The Hague. During this time he copied works by Paulus Potter and other animal painters. His copy of Potter's work "Young Bull" was bought by William V , Prince of Orange .

After his training he became a drawing teacher in Amsterdam, where he also made miniature portraits. Around 1805 he began to specialize in landscape painting with cattle. He followed the example of the masters of the 17th century, such as the famous animal painter Paulus Potter.

In the early years of the 19th century, Pieter Gerardus van Os owned a studio in Amsterdam and among his students were Wouterus Verschuur (1812–1874), Simon van den Berg (1812–1891), Guillaume Anne van der Brugghen (1811–1891) and Jan van Ravenswaay (1789–1869).

In the years 1813-1814 Van Os took part as captain of a volunteer corps in the siege of the fortress of Naarden , which was occupied by French troops . These experiences resulted in a series of paintings with a military theme, one of which was acquired by Tsar Alexander I. Then he painted landscapes with cattle again.

In 1808 he had a son, Pieter Frederik van Os (1808-1892), who continued the Dutch tradition of landscape painting until the end of the 19th century.
