life and work

George Jacobus Johannes van Os, son of the flower and marine painter Jan van Os (1744–1808) who imitated Jans van Huysum and brother of the animal painter Pieter Gerardus van Os (1776–1839), born on November 20, 1782 in The Hague , formed on my own hand and drew most of the plants and flowers for the flora batava by Jan Kops . In 1809 he won the prize of the Felix Meritis Society in Amsterdam , settled there and only now began to paint in oil . Soon you could see pieces of his flowers and fruit at almost every art exhibition , which, like his father, made him recognized as a worthy emulator of Jan van Huysum . In 1812 he went to Paris. There he decorated vessels of the Sèvres porcelain factory with flowers and fruits and painted next to it also birds and game birds . In 1817 he was permanently employed in Sèvres. The French called him the Rubens of flower painting. Os also tried his hand at landscape painting with success ; he died on July 11, 1861 in Paris.
