Jan van Os
Jan van Os (born February 23, 1744 in Middelharnis , † February 7, 1808 in The Hague ) was a Dutch flower painter. He also wrote poetry and plays.
Jan van Os was the ancestor of a Dutch family of artists. These included his sons, the painters Pieter Gerardus van Os (1776–1839) and Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os (1782–1861), his daughter Maria Margaretha van Os (1780–1862) and his grandson Pieter Frederik van Os (1808–1892) ).
Jan van Os moved to The Hague at a young age, where he studied with Aert Schouman (1710–1792). In 1773 he was registered as a member of the “Confrerie Pictura” artists' association in The Hague. The painter Hendrik Pothoven (1725–1807) created his portrait.
On September 17, 1775 he married the deaf and dumb portrait painter Susanna de la Croix , a daughter of the likewise deaf and dumb painter Pieter Frederik de la Croix . They had seven children, of whom 3 sons and 1 daughter reached adulthood.
Jan van Os initially painted seascapes, but became known for his still lifes with flowers and fruits in the style of Jan van Huysum , with which he made an international name for himself. His work has been exhibited in England , France and Germany .
He gave painting lessons to his children and Maria Margaretha's girlfriend, Petronella van Woensel (1785–1835).
