Jan van Ravenswaay (born November 29, 1789 in Hilversum ; † March 2, 1869 there ) was a Dutch animal and landscape painter.

Van Ravenswaay was born as the son of the cotton manufacturers Cornelis van Ravenswaay and Marritje de Blinde. At the age of 14 he began his apprenticeship as a painter with Jordanus Hoorn. He continued his training with the painter Pieter Gerardus van Os , who first lived in 's-Graveland and later in Hilversum.

After his training Van Ravenswaay went on study trips to Belgium , Germany and Switzerland . Back in Hilversum, he started teaching himself. His students included u. a. Fredrik Marinus Kruseman and Albertus Steenbergen .

Van Ravenswaay specialized in animal and landscape painting. He exhibited his works regularly and in 1818 received an award from the Felix Meritis Society. In 1822 he became a member of the Koninklijke Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and in 1831 of the "Arti Sacrum" in Rotterdam. In 1835 he acquired the site in Hilversum for the construction of the Boombergpark.

From 1839 to 1847 van Ravenswaay lived with his family in Westerbork in the province of Drenthe . During this time he created many landscapes, including drawings for the Drentschen folk almanac. The painting “View of Assen” (1841), which was commissioned by the former governor Daniël van Ewijck, dates from this period.

The Van Ravenswaay family then lived in Loosdrecht (1847-1852) and in Velp (1852-1855), after which they returned to Hilversum. He died there in 1869 at the age of 79.
