Westerbork is a village in the Dutch municipality of Midden-Drenthe , province of Drenthe .

About seven kilometers north of the community was the transit camp Westerbork , a concentration camp assembly camp from which over 100,000 Jews and " Gypsies " were deported to the concentration camps during the Nazi era . Among them were Anne Frank , Etty Hillesum and three children of the Humberg family , Margot, Vera and Jakob, who were gassed in Auschwitz at the age of 14, 10 and 8. The camp was set up in the time before the German invasion, initially as a reception camp for Jewish refugees from National Socialist Germany in order to accommodate them far from the coast. This later came in very handy for the National Socialists, as they were able to practically take over the camp and its residents and use it for its new purpose, the deportations to the east.

The Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope has been located near Westerbork since 1969 , a radio interferometer consisting of fourteen 25 meter sliding parabolic antennas for astronomical observations in the wavelength range from 3.6 to 110 cm. Ten of these radio telescopes are permanently mounted, while two can be moved on rails at the eastern end of the array. A second pair of movable dishes is located 1.4 kilometers east of it.
