Albertus Steenbergen
Albertus Alides Steenbergen (born May 26, 1814 in Hoogeveen , † February 20, 1900 there ) was a Dutch painter and writer.
As an infant, Steenbergen fell off a table, so that he was handicapped for life and had to move with crutches or in a wheelchair. After primary school he went to Coevorden , where he attended the French school. He then worked for a notary for a short time.
In 1833 he traveled to Hilversum , where he studied with the painter Jan van Ravenswaay . Steenbergen mainly painted birds, flowers and insects. In addition to oil painting, he created watercolors. In 1836 he moved to Haarlem , where many flower painters lived at that time. Steenbergen worked in Haarlem until 1839, after which he went to Amsterdam , where he spent three years. In 1842 he returned to Hoogeveen.
In 1857 he joined the community as a tax collector. He began to paint less and less and devoted himself more and more to writing. As a writer, he is best known for the book “De Nevelhekse”, which tells of a love between a doctor and a young girl who is regarded by her fellow citizens as a fog witch and to whom all kinds of disasters are attributed. According to some authors, the story is partly autobiographical.
