history

Plan by Coevorden in 1647

Coevorden (= cow ford) is mentioned for the first time in 1148. The place is strategically located on a sand ridge in the south of the Bourtanger Moor . Every trader who used the land route between Friesland and Münster had to travel through Coevorden.

On July 25, 1227 a bloody battle took place near Ane (Hardenberg parish), seven kilometers southwest of Coevorden, between the rebellious Lord von Coevorden (supported by the Drenter and Bentheim farmers) and the knights of the bishop of Utrecht. The Utrecht suffered a shameful defeat, and even the bishop was killed.

It was not until 1407 that Coevorden received city rights and the right to hold annual markets from the emperor . The city was destroyed to 33% by a major fire in 1579. When Georg von Lalaing, Count von Rennenberg transferred to the Spanish camp in 1580 during the Eighty Years War , his troops also occupied Coevorden. Johan van den Corput , who rushed up with Dutch troops , realized that the city could no longer be conquered and turned to the defense of Steenwijk . Coevorden was initially spared a siege. Moritz of Orange wrested the city from the Spaniards in 1592 (which burned down again, and this time almost completely) and had it developed into one of the strongest Dutch fortresses by 1605 . The famous fortress builder Menno van Coehoorn renewed these defenses. In 1672 it was conquered by Munster troops, and shortly afterwards it was regained by the Dutch. A reconquest by the Münsteraner failed due to a flood, which drowned the besiegers almost all.

Then Coevorden was a quiet border town for a long time, except for the French period (1804–1813). The railway connection in 1905 initiated industrialization. After 1950, however, many companies and regional authorities moved to the more modern Emmen .

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

railroad

The city is on the Zwolle – Stadskanaal railway line , which is served every half hour by local public transport to Emmen . Since 1910 the city has had a connection to the German rail network and the place Laar (border station) on the other side of the border through the Bentheimer Kreisbahn, now Bentheimer Eisenbahn AG . From there, the Gronau – Coevorden railway continues in the direction of Nordhorn and Bad Bentheim and, until 1981, to Gronau . Between 1974 and 2019, only goods traffic was carried out on the Bentheimer Eisenbahn AG route, but it is still very extensive. Since July 2019 there is again passenger traffic between Bad Bentheim and Neuenhaus; a continuation to Coevorden is being considered. On the Dutch side, Bentheimer Eisenbahn AG operates extensive freight traffic with its own track systems and connections to the network of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). The expansion of the Coevorden-Heege station in 2006/2007 brought the extension of the tracks across the German-Dutch border, so that it is now an "international" station.

Street

The N34 , a mostly two-lane country road, connects Coevorden with Emmen in the northeast and Ommen (Netherlands) and Zwolle in the southwest. Emlichheim (approx. 10 km) and Nordhorn in Germany can be reached via the B403 .

bus

The following bus routes operate in the city:

  • 26: Coevorden – Schoonebeek – Klazienaveen – Emmen
  • 21: Emmen – Erm – Sleen – Noordsleen – Schoonoord – Assen
  • 22: Zweeloo – Wezup – Westerbork – Beilen – Assen
  • 27: Hoogeveen – Geesbrug – Zwinderen – Gees – Oosterhesselen – Meppen – Aalden – Zweeloo – Emmen
  • 29: Coevorden – Slagharen – Dedemsvaart – Zwolle
  • 33: Coevorden – Steenwijksmoer – Nieuwe Krim – Dalerpeel – Nieuwlande – Hoogeveen
  • 223: Coevorden – Dalen – Wachtum – Oosterhesselen – Meppen – Aalden – Zweeloo

More recently, there has also been an on- call bus connection (line 11, tariff area Verkehrsgemeinschaft Grafschaft Bentheim ) to Emlichheim, where there is a connection to the regional bus line 10 in the direction of Neuenhaus . In Neuenhaus there is a transition to the train line RB 56 in the direction of Nordhorn and Bad Bentheim, with further connections from the local train station in the direction of Rheine and Osnabrück. A cross-border train offer to Coevorden is being examined. Since December 9, 2018, the Lower Saxony ticket has also been valid on VGB buses.

ship

Coevorden can be reached for 800 t ships via the Coevorden-Almelo Canal . The port is located on the edge of the cross-border business park Europark Coevorden-Emlichheim. Ships like a Kempenaar can travel from Rotterdam or Amsterdam to Coevorden in 18 hours. The municipality of Coevordens advocates that the canal be made navigable for larger ships. The province of Overijssel owns the canal.

economy

Wind turbines in Coevorden

Coevorden is an industrial and commercial town and has factories that produce animal feed, cardboard and building materials. In 1984, NATO set up a depot in the city where military supplies were distributed, serviced, and stocked and transhipped. This facility was taken over by the Dutch Army (Landmacht) in 1999 .

A large, cross-border industrial and commercial area, the Europark , is being developed together with the Emlichheim community . It can be reached by rail, barge and truck and was last expanded at the end of 2007.

Tourism is particularly important in the northern part of the municipality. After all, much of Coevorden's municipal area is used for agriculture.

Attractions

  • The goose market, which has been held annually in mid-November since around 1490, is now a folk festival at which, among other things, a "Miss goose guard" is chosen. Previously, geese traded for the Christmas table and slaughtered locally.
Coevorden Castle
  • Coevorden Castle, fully restored in 1972 . A copy of the castle can be found in Vancouver , Canada , the name of which is derived from a Mr. Van Coevorden .
  • The open-air museum Ellert en Brammert in Schoonoord. It is named after two legendary robbers, the giants Ellert and Brammert. The museum gives an insight into life in Drenthe in the 18th and 19th centuries.
  • The local museum of Coevorden, near the castle in the former arsenal .
  • The picturesque farming villages of Aalden and Meppen, Gees and Oosterhesselen. In the latter is the manor house "De Klencke" (not open to the public) with a park that is well worth seeing and a nature reserve (hiking trails; owned by the Natural Monuments Foundation). Aalden is considered to be one of the most picturesque places in the Netherlands.
  • In the district of Dalen, just outside the center and near the German border, you will find the De Huttenheugte holiday park from the Center Parcs brand . The park was established in 1972 and attracts guests primarily from Germany and the Netherlands.
