An arsenal ( Italian arsenal , French arsenal , Catalan drassanes from the Arabic dār as-ṣināʿa  /دار الصناعة / 'Workshop, factory') is a military facility with an operation in which weapon systems and other equipment, machines and systems of the armed forces are stored, maintained and repaired. Until the 17th century the term, based on the eponymous arsenal of Venice , only referred to naval workshops. The corresponding device for the weapons of the land forces was armory called.

A pure store for firearms ammunition , aerial bombs and rockets is also called an ammunition depot . Originally built as an arsenal buildings were in the German language as an armory called.

Structurally, an arsenal consists of warehouses and workshops. Marine arsenals can also be repair yards with their own dock facilities.

In Germany arsenals are subordinate to the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr , a civil authority within the scope of the Ministry of Defense . The two naval arsenal operations are located in Kiel and Wilhelmshaven . The French Navy operates a naval arsenal in Toulon .

The arsenal of Venice is named after the oldest and most historically significant . Its construction began in 1104, and parts of it are still used by the military today.

Other meanings

In a figurative sense, arsenal is used to denote the weaponry of an army or an entire state .

Weapons collections belonging to individuals or noble houses and exhibition halls are also referred to as arsenals .
