Location of the arsenal at Pfaffenteich in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania |
The Arsenal am Pfaffenteich is a historic building in Schwerin , which is currently the seat of the Ministry of the Interior and Sports of the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
The arsenal was built in the years 1840 (start of construction) to 1844 (first occupancy) according to a design by the court architect Georg Adolf Demmler under the supervision of Hermann Willebrand and Gottlieb Ruge on the south-west bank of the Schwerin Pfaffenteich . The building, made of around six million bricks, cost 134,000 thalers .
The arsenal was initially used as an armory and after the First World War as a police barracks. In this capacity, the building was called Adolf-Hitler - Kaserne during the time of the Third Reich . After brief use as accommodation for refugees from the Second World War until July 1947, the building was almost seamlessly used as the seat of the district authority of the German People's Police (BDVP). The Arsenal has been the home of the Interior Ministry in Schwerin since 1990.
