geography

Geographical location

Ommen is about 20 kilometers east of Zwolle and 35 kilometers northeast of Deventer . It lies on the banks of the Vechte , not far from the mouth of the Regge tributary .

Community structure

The municipality consists of the town of Ommen, the village of Lemele (about 600 inhabitants) and several smaller towns, including: Vilsteren, Beerze, Eerde and Beerzerveld.

history

Ommen received city rights in 1248 . It remained a small settlement around a toll bridge. A ski jump was built north of the Vechte during the Eighty Years War in 1628 . Instead of this "Ommerschans" came in 1820 a labor camp for beggars and vagrants from the major cities of Holland . In the - never very successful - institution these people were supposed to learn the farming trade.

In the 1920s, Ommen was known worldwide because the Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti held his meetings at the nearby Eerde Castle as part of the Order of the Star in the East , which sometimes drew 3,000 listeners to Ommen. After Krishnamurti had returned the Eerde Castle, which he had no longer used for a long time, to the van Pallandts family in 1931, they rented it to the Quakers, who set up a school here for persecuted children from Germany.

Near Castle Eerde was after the occupation of the Netherlands in 1940 by the Nazis , the prison detention Erika furnished. Mainly "black marketeers" and resistance fighters came to this camp . Jews were usually not interned here. From here numerous prisoners were taken to German concentration camps and murdered there. The camp was notorious for the brutality of the camp personnel, which included a member of the Waffen-SS Herbertus Bikker (1915–2008), “the executioner of Ommen”. After the liberation in 1945, the camp served for some time to intern members and sympathizers of the now banned NSB .

The current municipality of Ommen was newly formed on May 1, 1923 through the merger of the previous municipalities of Ambt Ommen and Stad Ommen .
