The Irízar Crater is a large and old volcanic crater on Deception Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It lies between Mount Irízar and the Argentine research station Decepción at Port Foster . The crater is home to the Irízar lagoon .
The British geologist Donald Durston Hawkes (* 1934) from the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey mapped it in 1961. Polish scientists named it after the mountain of the same name in the neighborhood. Its namesake is Julián Irízar (1869-1935), captain of the Argentine corvette Uruguay , which was used in the rescue of the stranded participants in the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901-1903).
