Map of Deception Island with Port Foster |
The Port Foster is by seawater stuffed caldera of Deception Iceland in the South Shetland Islands .
This bay had been known to seal hunters since 1820 and at that time was called Port Williams after the brig of the same name belonging to the English navigator William Smith , who discovered the South Shetland Islands. The name Yankee Harbor was given to it by American seal hunters. A little later, however, the current name prevailed. It is named after the British polar traveler Henry Foster (1796–1831), who carried out geomagnetic surveys in this bay in 1829.
