Madison Nicole "Maddie" Ziegler (born September 30, 2002 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American dancer , actress and model . She gained a lot of attention for her solo dance performance, choreographed especially for her , in the music video for the song Chandelier by the Australian singer Sia . In 2015, 2016 and 2017 Ziegler was named by Time magazine in the list of "30 Most Influential Teens ".

Life

Maddie Ziegler is the daughter of Melissa Gisoni and Kurt Ziegler. She is of Polish , German and Italian descent. Her younger sister, Mackenzie Ziegler , is a dancer, model, actress and singer. She also has two half-brothers from her father's first marriage and two step-siblings from her step-father's previous marriage. After living in a small house in Murrysville , Pennsylvania for several years, the family moved into a larger new single family home in 2015 . She also lives temporarily in Los Angeles , California .

Ziegler began dancing at the age of two, became an active member of the Abby Lee Dance Company at the age of four and has since been trained in ballet , contemporary dance , acro dance, jazz dance and acrobatics . Ziegler attended Sloan Elementary School in Murrysville until 2013 and has been home tuition ever since .

Career

As an actress and dancer

Ziegler became internationally known for the reality TV show Dance Moms , produced by Lifetime Television in Pittsburgh , in which she has participated since 2011. During this time she won several national dance competitions and awards. She made her acting debut in 2012 in an episode of the American television series Drop Dead Diva , in which she played the young dancer Deb Dobkins . She took on another small role as Shelby Hayden in 2015 in an episode of the Disney television series Austin & Ally . That same year, she made a guest appearance on an episode of the ABC Family television series Pretty Little Liars . In 2016 she appeared on an episode of the Nickelodeon- produced sitcom Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn as Eiffel and starred in Colin Trevorrow's drama The Book of Henry alongside Naomi Watts , Sarah Silverman , Lee Pace and Dean Norris in the role of Christina made her feature film debut . During the sixth season of Dance Moms , which started in January 2016 , Ziegler left the reality show to focus more on acting and other projects.

Music videos as well as live and television appearances

Since the singer and songwriter Sia claims to be a big fan of the TV show Dance Moms , she noticed the extraordinary talent of the then eleven year old. Sia asked Ziegler via Twitter whether she would be interested in appearing in the music video for her single Chandelier . Ziegler then assured her participation. Sia hired the Los Angeles-based choreographer Ryan Heffington and worked with him to develop a solo dance choreography for Ziegler. In the video, Ziegler dances with a blonde Sia wig and skin-colored leotard in an abandoned apartment, stepping, jumping, turning and crawling from room to room. The video, released on May 6, 2014, attracted a great deal of attention from both audiences and media and has since been viewed over 2 billion times on YouTube . The music video for the song Chandelier won the "Best Choreography" award at the MTV Video Music Awards 2014 and was nominated for a Grammy .

Due to the success of the music video, Sia and Ziegler received requests for live performances from presenters of American television and late night shows , including Jimmy Kimmel , Ellen DeGeneres and Seth Meyers . They performed with Chandelier on The Ellen DeGeneres Show , Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Dancing with the Stars . Sia sang with her back to the audience and Ziegler performed her dance choreography. In Dancing with the Stars they also appeared together with the American dancer Allison Holker. Sia also appeared with Ziegler on other songs such as Big Girls Cry and Elastic Heart .

On October 24, 2014, Sia and Ziegler performed together at a We Can Survive concert by CBS Radio at the Hollywood Bowl open-air stage in Los Angeles and also performed all three songs live. At this concert, Sia sang the song Diamonds, which she co-wrote for Rihanna, with her back to the camera and Ziegler danced in the audience.

In the music video for the song Elastic Heart by Sia, which was released on January 7, 2015, Ziegler can be seen fighting and dancing in a cage alongside actor Shia LaBeouf . On January 17, 2015, Sia made a guest appearance with Ziegler and another dancer on the American comedy show Saturday Night Live . Sia sang the song Elastic Heart and the two dancers presented a new choreography. On January 30, 2015, Sia and Ziegler performed again on The Ellen DeGeneres Show with the single Elastic Heart . At the Grammy Awards 2015 on February 8, 2015, Sia presented together with the American actress and comedian Kristen Wiig and Ziegler a reinterpretation of their music video for Chandelier with a new set design and a different dance choreography compared to the music video. On April 2, 2015, Sia released the official music video for the song Big Girls Cry , in which Ziegler again appeared in the same outfit with a blonde Sia wig and a skin-colored suit and expressed her feelings not through dance, but with facial expressions and gestures . On May 5, 2015, Ziegler appeared again on Dancing with the Stars . She danced a solo to the song Hold Back The River by James Bay and in Somewhere Over the Rainbow she danced with the young dancers Brynn Rumfallo and Jaycee Wilkins to the singing of Josh Groban . On December 1, 2015, Sia and Ziegler performed the single Alive again on The Ellen DeGeneres Show .

In February 2016, Ziegler danced with other dancers in the ABC TV special The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60 to the singing of the American country pop singer Kelsea Ballerini and a choreography by Travis Wall.

On March 21, 2016, Sia released the video for her single Cheap Thrills, the fourth music video in collaboration with Ziegler. In it she dances with two other dancers in the well-known Sia outfit with a black and blonde wig and skin-colored leotard, while Sia can be seen singing in the background. For a one-hour Sia concert on April 17, 2016 at the Coachella Festival 2016 , Ziegler danced again for the singer in newly produced music videos that were shown on a projection screen . The 19-year-old dancer Stephanie Mincone took on the alternative live performances in sync with the videos on the screen. On May 24, 2016, Sia and Ziegler appeared with Cheap Thrills in the finale of the tenth season of the US talent show The Voice .

From May 30, 2016, Ziegler appeared on the Fox dance competition show So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation as a juror alongside Jason Derulo , Nigel Lythgoe and Paula Abdul . The program dealt with the search for young talented dancers between the ages of 8 and 13 years.

The music video for the Sia single The Greatest was released on September 6, 2016 , in which Ziegler can be seen together with a group of other young dancers. On September 7, 2016, Sia and Ziegler appeared as music guests at the “Apple Special Event” for the presentation of the iPhone 7 with the songs The Greatest and Chandelier and performed together at the iHeartRadio Music Festival . From the end of September to the beginning of November 2016, Ziegler also accompanied the singer on her Nostalgic For The Present tour through North America .

On September 19, 2017, Sia released the music video Rainbow from the soundtrack to My Little Pony: The Film, after a long break, a video with a dance solo by Ziegler.

The joint dance and music videos with Sia have now been viewed more than 3.5 billion times on the YouTube and Vevo video portals . (Status: September 2017) Ziegler has also appeared as a dancer in numerous music videos by other artists.

Model and other activities

Ziegler was signed by the modeling agency IMG Models and previously worked as a model for various fashion brands such as Glitzy Girl , Capezio and Purple Pixies including a Betsey Johnson line, Target and Ralph Lauren . She is also on numerous covers of magazines and in various fashion spreads, including Schön! Magazine , Harper's Bazaar , People , Dazed , Cosmopolitan , iD , Billboard , Teen Vogue , Seventeen , Maniac Magazine , Stella and Vanity Fair . She was a correspondent for Elle Magazine at New York Fashion Week 2015 .

With her sister Mackenzie , who is two years her junior , she released her own fashion collection, limited to 100 unique pieces, in October 2014, called the Maddie & Mackenzie Collection . The sisters also danced together for the American women's magazine Glamor in the fashion trend video Maddie + Mackenzie Dance the fall trends . and shot a commercial for WowWee .

Ziegler shot the short dance film Lucky Thirteen for the British fashion magazine iD , in which the American actress Chloë Sevigny acted as the narrator. Ziegler also worked for an advertising campaign for dance shoe manufacturer Capezio in the dance in you commercial . In a video for Teen Vogue , she danced with The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall .

On October 3, 2016, Ziegler launched his own fashion collection for girls under the name “Maddie”. In March 2017, Ziegler published The Maddie Diaries: A Memoir, a book about her career to date. In 2018, Ziegler worked with the jewelry manufacturer Tiffany & Co. for an advertising campaign.

In 2012, Ziegler and her mother and sister Mackenzie entered into a partnership with the Starlight Children's Foundation , which cares for chronically ill children and adolescents. Ziegler stated that she would like to devote her time to helping other children and that it was a rewarding experience. In May 2016, Ziegler and her sister announced that they would be supporting a birthday campaign for 'DoSomething.org', which enables people to send self-made birthday cards to children who live in homeless shelters.
