James Bay (born September 4, 1990 in Hitchin , Hertfordshire ) is an English singer-songwriter .

biography

James Bay began as a musician in his home in Hertfordshire solo and in various bands. He was booked as a support musician and played in the opening act for concerts by Tom Odell , John Newman and Kodaline . That is how the label Republic Records became aware of him and signed him in 2012.

His first five-song EP was released a year later in Great Britain under the title The Dark of the Morning . Bay then played at the Glastonbury Festival and in Hyde Park in the opening act of a Rolling Stones concert. He also accompanied Taylor Swift on the European portion of their 1989 World Tour.

At the beginning of 2014 the EP was also released in the USA, where it was placed in the Billboard Heatseeker Charts. The second EP Let It Go followed in the summer . Again it came in the US Heatseeker charts, in addition, the title song rose in the British charts . At the end of the year, James Bay was a candidate for the breakthrough in several 2015 predictions. It received the Critics' Choice Award from the BRIT Awards and was ranked second on the BBC's Sound of 2015 . He was also nominated for MTV Brand New for 2015. His third EP, Hold Back the River, was released at the end of the year . The theme song entered the top 20 of the UK charts and then fell back. In the tenth week he returned to the top 20 and finally reached number 2. In many other countries he was also able to place, in Australia and the German-speaking countries the song reached the top 10. On March 20, 2015, his first studio album was released called Chaos and the Calm and debuted at number 1 on the UK charts.
