The beginnings of the CBS group go back to 1927. The radio division is one of the oldest radio companies in the country.

CBS has long been the main news provider on US radio. During the Second World War , CBS correspondents covered the theaters of war. Edward R. Murrow reported live from the German air raids on the city from London.

In 1995 Westinghouse bought the CBS network and two years later expanded it massively with the acquisition of Infinity Broadcasting. Infinity Broadcasting merged with the TV network CBS in 1997 and was a subsidiary of the media group Viacom until the end of 2005, as part of CBS . With the division of Viacom into two groups, the Infinity Broadcasting Corporation, under the new name CBS Radio, has belonged to the CBS Corporation since January 1, 2006 .

For a long time, CBS Radio and with it the CBS radio stations broadcast the NFL's final, the Super Bowl . The content syndication provider Westwood One of the Cumulus Media Group now holds the rights.

In 2014, CBS swapped 14 of its radio stations for 5 from the Beasley Broadcasting Group .

In March 2016, the CBS management announced that from 2017 they would concentrate their offerings on their own television network, the TV cable and satellite channel "Showtime" (SHO) and digital services. According to the information, CBS Radio is to be sold, spun off or "swapped".

In 2016, CBS CEO Leslie Moonves said the group would sell its radio division. While the parent company was preparing its IPO, it was announced on February 2, 2017 that the competing company Entercom is taking over CBS Radio. This led to the situation that previously competing stations such as the sports stations WEEI-FM (Entercom) and 98.5 “The Sports Hub” (CBS) on the Boston radio market belong to the same family of owners.
