The studios are located in the CBS Radio Building on 625th Second Avenue South in downtown Minneapolis. The transmitter, however, is in Coon Rapids . history
WCCO started operations on September 4, 1922 as WLAG . The station was known for its slogan “the Call of the North” . WLAG was broadcasting from a hotel in Loring Park, Minneapolis. Due to financial problems, however, the company was closed again in 1924. The Washburn Crosby Company took over the station as WCCO to reflect the company's initials. WCCO went on the air two months after the purchase from the Coon Rapids broadcast site, which is still in use today . In 1927 WCCO was one of 21 stations on the NBC Red Network .
In 1939, the 654-foot transmitter mast was built in Coon Rapids and is still in use today.
Like the television station WCCO-TV, WCCO-Radio belonged to the media entrepreneur and ice hockey official Robert "Bob" Blair Ridder (July 21, 1919 - June 24, 2000).
signal
Thanks to Minnesota's flat landscape and the high transmission power, WCCO has one of the largest coverage areas in the USA. During the day, the signal is received in at least medium quality in almost all of Minnesota ( Duluth to Rochester ), including large parts of Iowa and Wisconsin . If the propagation conditions are good, the signal is also picked up in North and South Dakota.
At night, the signal reaches 28 US states and three Canadian provinces. Sometimes it is also recorded further north. WCCO moderator Howard Viken reported that he heard WCCO in the Guadalcanal Islands in 1943 . WCCO has also been broadcasting on HD radio since 2005 .
Awards
From 1947 to 1996 WCCO Radio and WCCO-TV (Channel 4) won twelve George Foster Peabody Awards , more than any other broadcaster in the Twin Cities.
