history

The FM 102.7 MHz frequency was licensed to WNJY-FM from Newark , New Jersey in the mid-1940s , but the station never went on the air. In 1953, the station returned its license to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). After some confusion, WNEW-FM started operating on this frequency in 1958.

In 1966, WNEW-FM advertised an "all-girls" -MOR format, which consisted of the all-female presenters Alison Steele, Nell Bassett, Arlene Kieta, Ann Clements and Margaret Draper. The format did not exist for very long and was related to the launch of the first rock'n roll station in New York , WOR-FM . Between 1958 and 1986 the station shared the callsign WNEW with the former AM sister station WNEW-AM (on 1130 kHz) and the TV station WNEW-TV (Channel 5), all of which belonged to Metromedia . WNEW-TV was sold to News Corporation in 1986 and became WNYW . The AM station went to Bloomberg LP in 1992 and became WBBR .

Dennis Elsas made WNEW known through creative music programs and in-depth musician interviews. Elsas first worked as a presenter for WNEW-FM, then as a presenter and music director for the station. He was instrumental in making the station one of the most prestigious progressive rock radio stations in the country. He interviewed Pete Townshend , Mick Jagger , Paul McCartney and John Lennon . After 25 years at WNEW , he switched to the public radio station WFUV . With the new owner CBS Radio, the station plays a hot adult contemporary format.
